Strange noise and power loss

When throttle is depressed quickly, engine makes a quick "sucking sound", as if there was an air leak somewhere near the intake manifold. Car is also down on power. I have checked all of the vacuum lines and check the tightness of the manifold bolts, and everything looks OK.

Any ideas?

Actually it's my son's car. He races it in the SCCA IT class. It's a manual gearbox, but I don't know the build date. He had removed and replaced the air intake prior to this problem. At my suggestion, he did remove the intake again and made sure all the o-rings were seated properly. The engine also has a slight backfire under quick deceleration.

It's obiuosly sucking in air, recheck the install.

Did he remove the VFAD?

Backfire is normal.

I unplugged the VFAD, but left the hardware in. Do you think that may be a problem? When the car acts up, which is around 45 min or interstate drive, it pings everywhere. Strange marble sounds coming from the intake. Sometimes I can hear clicking around the spark plugs. All connections are good. New coils, plugs, wires, and wire seperators. New air filter and clean MAF. All fluids are changed before time. I take good care of this car, but I do drive it hard. I was leaning toward the heater core, because it changes a little when I use the heater. The sounds are coming from the intake more than the glovebox, and I am getting a major power loss. From what I have read the heater core does not have perfomance issues.
I have been on the fence to purchase the Inter-X for a year. I did not want to buy it and problem still exists. I am wondering if that may be the answer to it all. I do have the typhoon intake. I know it could not be the contributor for this much problem, but it could be. So I have considered getting the RB intake first. I just don't want to dance around the problem anymore. Help!

^A tear can occur on the rubber of the MAF O-ring when removing/re-installing it allowing unmetered air to enter the engine.

The sucking sound when depressing the pedal quickly at idle is normal. The 8 has an electronic throttle body there is a slight lag time between the pedal and the throttle. If that concerns you, you should do this on a 6s. You press the pedal quickly at idle and there is a looong time that goes by before you hear the sucking sound of the throttle plate opening.

down on power? check your plugs and coils

Air will get by even if the MAF is flush with the surface. Reason: I had to put a new ring on, and it is just a smidge too big, but it feels like it is snugging on right.
Will the engine run if 1 plug is not firing?
