Spark Plug Cracked!

Recently my car was bringing up a CEL for ignition coil failure primary/secondary circuit and was misfiring badly. Also the revs were up at 6K when driving out my driveway and should have been at 3-3.5K. I checked the coils and they were fried so I ordered new coils and replaced them.

Problem was still there only now the car wouldn't start at all. I then took out the plugs to clean them. When i had one of the leading plugs out I noticed the plastic casing was cracked and burned in several places.

I replaced all the plugs and the car is running better than ever.

Would this cracking/burning have anything to do with a surcharge or something similar from the ignition coils?

It could have been from a failing coil electrical surge, or it could have just been a latent defect in the plug itself. Unusual in either case. Glad you got it sorted.

Although a bit pricey compared to other vehicles, I don't know why people don't change their 'plugs more often. It can make a world of difference and is relatively cheap insurance.

Over-torqued plugs... possibly.

Thing is they were put in properly. The cracks have burn marks on the edges. I said this to the company I bought them from but they are having none of it and won't give me either a refund or replacement.

Sounds like a defective plug to me. If the company you bought them from won't take care of you, I would just take my future business elsewhere.

At least it was ONLY a bad plug and nothing more serious.

Yeah definitely a defective plug. I don't want to take my business elsewhere as the company (who shall remain nameless ) have excellent prices and postal service. the have a point though, even though I only installed the plugs 6 months ago I bought them a year ago and it's understandable that they won't warrant it.

Thanks 04! The worst part is trying everything to fix it. Starting with the obvious and cheapest then working your way to not so obvios and expensive It's annoying when you have to wait a full day for job to finish before you can work on the car. The best part is staying at it and fixing it then coming on here to share the knowledge!

BTW, I've seen stuff about people asking others not be an "RX-8 Fanboi". What the hell is a fanboi!?

Good "stick-to-it-iveness" EHS.

A "fanboi" (fanatic-boy) is someone who is so subjective in his/her RX-8 vision and support that he/she cannot accept the truth in a given objective discussion.

Ah right, I see! You mean like if they have a problem they won't listen to other peoples' suggestions as to how what the problem is and all that?

More often they won't even accept that there is a problem.
