I know the question has been asked but not really answered, so I need a spare tire for my 2004 rx8 which is currently riding on 18 factory rims.

Where can you buy one besides the dealer?
What size? besides the obvious? (18)
Can you use other import car's spares like Honda, Acura, BMW...etc?

The temporary spare is enough of a compromise as it is, I wouldn't push my luck trying to get something "close". If you want to avoid dealer prices I'd suggest trying to find another owner who is selling their spare. It's common enough. Check the parts for sale section, or Ebay. If you get the spare, you should also get the mounting bracket so that you can make use of your trunk and also to keep the wheel from becoming a projectile.

I got mine for like 300 bux shipped I think dont even remember.

I dont carry it most of the time, I only put it into the trunk if Im going for longer trips (like going to Jersey)

It sounds like a lot of money, but its really helpful when u have a flat (happened to me 3 times when I dont have the spare in the trunk ... when I have it in, I never have a flat for almost a year!)
