I am now.
Purchased 10/2003
47k miles
I just took it in to my Tucson dealer. Originally they said it was a bad computer that needed to be sent off to Irivne for reprogramming. This morning they called and said I was getting a whole new engine.

Aside from the pain of having the car in the shop, and the obvious flaws in the engine...isn't getting a new engine a good thing?
If I pulled my car into service and the dealer told me, "hey gonna give you a new engine, need like 2 weeks and you dont pay a dime." I'd be like f**k ya!
If there's something I'm missing, please educate me

Symptoms: Rough idle, knocks & pings, loss of power, dying
Don't get me wrong I was extremely pleased to find out I am getting a new engine.
I was just a little confused that the problem went from bad computer to new engine.
I am also now having them check the cat. - Thanks to y'all.
I live south of Tucson in the foothills the climate is not as extreme as Phoenix. We do not get too many 100+ days down here. It is dry though.
Thanks for your responses.

Did the newer spark plugs, Just changed the oil and Guess fricking what, it was looking like I was panning for gold !
.
For those that don't know what that means.....bearing/seal material in the oil pan.
NOT a good find.
I like my car, but there is no reason this should happen.
338xx miles.

simple,. i didnt pay $30,000 for a car that needs a totally new engine inside of 2 years
and whos to say that the next engine wont do the same thing, get in our shoes and see how cool you think it is
and it ruins your resale value (reason: does vechile have a histroy of mechanical problems? yes, why, yes it does)

New engine
Bought my wife's RX8 in January 2004. Started experiencing strange idle problems in April of the same year when the weather started heating up and use of the A/C came into play. Took the vehicle in to the dealer but they could not replicate the problem and, understandably, could do nothing about it.
As the weather continued to heat up (we live in Utah) the problem got progressively worse until the vehicle lost power (scary in the middle of an intersection) and ultimately stalled and we had to be towed into the dealership (3 times). I was so frustrated with the events that I started proceedings to declare the vehicle a lemon. This occurred over a period of a year. The dealership told me that the next time it occurred that I was not to attempt to start the vehicle and just have it towed directly to them so that they could get a more accurate reading from the vehicle's on-board diagnostics and codes. At 14,000 miles they told me that the engine needed to be replaced due to vapor-locking of the engine which could not be fixed. Told me it was not a heat/weather issue. Six weeks and a crappy Chevy rental car later we got our vehicle back with the new(?) engine.
Had the car (with new engine) almost 8 months now (during the fall/winter/spring COOL months) and it has run pretty well but now we have been experiencing a few days in the 90º range and the car is acting suspect again (strange idling and erratic RPM shifts). My wife is now leery of driving the car as she stalled twice in the middle of intersections during the initial problem (pre-engine swap) so I guess I will be driving her RX8 while she drives my 2005 Mazda3 (love that car!).
Another issue I have had with this vehicle, related or not I don't know, but when accelerating at a rapid pace (eg., entering a freeway on-ramp) the engine sounds like someone is shaking a tin can filled with stones.
I don't know that this post will help anyone but I have been waiting to vent for far too long.

this is how you replicate my problem, drive if for about 20 minutes, freeway speeds, get that engine nice and hot, and then stop... having the AC on helps, my engine would die everytime

3 weeks and still waiting on the new engine installation. WTF?
My love for this car is not growing fonder with absense.
I have not researched this yet but for a leased car do I have any recourse when the car needs an engine replacement?

I'll add myself to the list too. Grabbed a CPO 2005 AT in February with 12,500 miles on it for my girlfriend. Coolant light came on last week and when I checked it found the coolant level to be pretty low.
Topped it off and she brought the car in for its first maintenance visit since the purchase for an oil change and tire rotation while I'm traveling for work. Mentioned the car had been low on coolant and if they could check it out. She told me tonight that they left a message for her saying the engine block had a leak in the seal and they're ordering her a new engine under warranty. I'm going to call them tomorrow to get all the details.
Fortunately it still has another 7 years and 85k miles of powertrain warranty. I guess it means I'll just leave this car mostly stock.

Add me to the list
I got the call today from the dealership.....ordering a brand new engine (not a reman).
I have a 2004 Manual Transmission RX-8, in Orlando, FL. Bought it used a little over 6 months ago, and am within about 4K miles of being out of warranty.
Started noticing weird vibrations and shutters when stopped. Then had several stalling episodes when coming off the Interstate after 20 minutes or so. A couple of weeks ago it stalled and would not restart. Was told by Mazda it was due to flooding (right). CEL that is regularly on said to be from a minor EVAP leak.
Also been experiencing the loss of power AND rattling sounds after the engine gets hot.
After getting the car back from the delaership from the de-flood procedure....that same day I had the same loss of power/stalling problems.....I drove it straight to the dealership.....they took it right back...and this time they realized I was genuinely having problems.
They sent the computer to "the factory".....got it back today and found it did not correct the problems. In the meantime, a Mazda rep had been out to look at my car.
Got the phone call today.....we're going to put a new engine in, and not a reman. The computer changes didn't help. Blaming it on "thermal failure".
So my question is the same as everyone else's.....what will I do in 2-3 more years when this happens again?
I am not is the desert.....this car hasn't seen a day over 95 in my care....and I see these problems anytime the outside temp is over 85 degrees. When it's cool outside, things are great.
I think we're on to an epidemic.....this isn't good.

Mentalhealth is overrated
I'm part of the club. I bought the car in July 2004 and had a new engine in September 2004. They never did tell me what they found. The care was acting exactly opposite from the flooding issue. If the car was cold, it would start. If the car was warm after driving for 1/2 hour, it wouldn't start until it cooled off.

I don't buy Kool-Aid
I have never had my waterpump replaced on. However I think the 2 combined may have been the main cause of Engine damages. I too am now part of the "New Engine" club...
