Just took my 2004 RX8 (77,000 miles) for Smog Check today. It failed the HC (HydroCarbon) test. Measured 162, and max is 55 (on the 15 mph test)

Just got a new engine about 5,000 miles ago.

Thoughts??! Advice? Can it be CAT? Is my CAT still covered under warranty?

It would be helpful to know CO, NOX, and co2 and O2 readings.
Can you post a copy of the smog sheet?

the HC reading on its own indicates your engine has a misfire, (plug, wires, ect)

I think the CAT is covered till 80,000 miles.

Quick cheat sheet for dealing with emissions issues:

High HC = ignition issues = bad spark plugs, coils, wires, or low compression.

High CO - bad convertor

High NOx - running too lean (high combustion temps) or bad convertor

You need to check out your coils wires and plugs soon, otherwise you're going to have another junk motor on your hands.

So took my car to dealer, since I got a new engine a few months ago (under warranty), and new spark plugs, ignition coils and wires. Told them to check the CAT since I had some rattling noise. And would be the main item that would probably cause the high HC on the smog test.

I showed them the Smog report. They checked it out, and replaced my CAT (under warranty), my 8 years are up next week. So about 8 days away from hitting 8 year mark!!! Definitely saved some $$$$.

Picked up car today and will be taking it back to get it Smog Checked tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.

Took my car for Smog re-check after getting new CAT and......... it passed.
HC readings = 4 ppm Max = 55 (15mph test)

Digger:
First smog test results were (15mph test):
CO2 = 14.8
O2 = 0.1
HC = 162 ppm Max = 55 (Failed)
CO =0.16 Max = 0.50
NO = 347 Max = 437

After getting new CAT:
CO2 = 14.7
O2 = 0.0
HC = 4 ppm Max = 55
CO =0.08 Max = 0.50
NO = 0 ppm Max = 437

have a 2007 rx8 and took it to get a smog check and it didn't pass! i recently changed coils,spark plugs, and Sp. cables. (also did a injectors fuel cleaning)


first run @15mph

CO2 : 14.5
O2 : 0.2
HC(rpm) : max-55 ave-4 meas-141
CO : 0.50


second run @25mph

CO2: 14.6
O2 : 0.1
HC(rpm) : max-39 ave-4 meas-90

i ran my ethos scanner and was monitoring the O2 sensor but it was responding good…

THINK THE CAT MIGHT BE BAD….? :/ ANY ONE KNOW IF THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE CAT??? ITS A 2007 AND IT ONLY HAS 70K MILES ON IT………

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
