Shift **** shakes?

My shift **** shakes along with suspension. Meaning when I am on pumpy freeway, it shakes up and down as the suspension moves up and down. And the vinyl cover around it rubs against itself making a squeaking sound. Anyone notice the same thing?

Think about it a minute. The shift lever is attached to the transmission which is attached to the drive shaft which is attached to the rear axles (through the differential) which is attached to the wheels which are attached to the shocks/springs. The thigh bone connected to the.....no wait, that's not it.

So, when the car is rolling down the road and hits a bump, the wheel bounces, the axle bounces, the drive shaft bounces, the transmission bounces and therefore the shift lever bounces. All this is happening the body of the car, which is not directly attached to the shift lever, blah, blah, blah, because of the laws of momentum (or one of those physics thingys) is trying to maintain it's position in space and because of that it doesn't necessarily move in sync with the shift lever, etc. It may move because of the bump, but not necessarily in sync with the components mentioned.

Thanks for the reply. How about the sqeaking noise? The vinyl cover rubs itself and makes the sound. Do you hear that? I didn't hear that sound before. How to get rid of the sound?

Haven't heard the squeak, but if I did I would treat the vinyl with a little Maguiar's leather treatment or some other leather treatment goop. If the vinyl is squeaking against the shift lever, try a little--very little--vaseline on the shaft, I mean shift, lever. Did I really say that? :D
