Bomba, what happens if you try to start the engine with your head lamps switched on, do they dim quickly or stay bright ? The reason I ask, if if you have a bad connection ie: the cable to the starter motor or battery terminal ,the lights will fade quickly. If you check the nut on the starter, disconnect the negative terminal at the battery first, you don't want to short out anything.Apart from that, pull the starter off, connect a battery to it to see if it actually works.

and be careful dorking around with the power lead going into the starter. It is ALWAYS hot.

Well haven't tried the lights yet. Iv'e been busy working but I will try later today. And also I hear the clicking right under the fuse box or its a fuse itself. I took out the IGNITION fuse and going to test if its okay. But has anybody had a problem with hearing a clicking noise coming from the fuse box?

Thanks everybody. Love this forum. (I will keep updating what I do and what works.)

And for the guy that asked where I am at. Im in NY like a hour away from Buffalo.

ISSUE FIXED

Thanks everybody for the help. I was new to this and should have started with the starter. Had a feeling it was the problem. (which it was) but threw me off when I saw the security light come on and my keyless remote didn't work. (because I took it apart)

Well I had it towed to Mazda dealer near Buffalo ( Towne Auto - Your Positively Different New And Used Car Dealer In Buffalo, NY ) and they said it was the starter and it flooded. So replaced it with an after market start. Then a good raping in wallet. (learned my lesson) Nice people but ehhh expensive. So that fixed that. Then realized why my Remote wasn't working... forgot to reattach one more piece to it. (I am now good at tearing down the keyfob and knowing what it needs lol) But dealer also cut the new key for me.

Bought a new keyfob but will not work because there are 3 different kinds. My FCC number is different than the one they sent me. So working on getting the right one (From Remotez4Less). Will post later on when I get it working.

Thanks for everybody that tried helping!

K
Put it in...still no cranking, just lights on the gauge cluster. Decided to check fuses and my main fuse was blown. $10.00 later my 8 is running fine again.

Question for you: When you say it does not crank you mean that it is not turning over at all correct (like Topwiz mentioned above).

Also, when you put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "on" position does your radio, door locks, windows roll down, etc. work? If not it is most likely a fuse...
my windows and radio don't work and locks and heat. Which relay fuse could cause this?

I changed out the power window fuses and they still don't work. So thinking could be a relay fuse.

This makes no sense. If it cranks fast and you can push start it then logically it should fire right up when you crank it. If it had a bad clutch sensor or similar then it would never crank.

Hello guys, im also having problems with my 04. It was running just fine, went out of the country on the 14th, came back on the 29th, tried starting it yesterday and its cranking really slow and will not start. I thought it was the battery so i jumped it and no luck. I just got the car in august and have since replaced the coils with the BHR ignition kit, replaced the battery terminals, and replaced the starter a few months back. What could be causing this? Maybe i got a dud of a starter?

Here is a video i recorded today.

Thanks!

Get your battery checked.
Happened to me recently with a 3 year old battery that I bought a few months after I first got it.
Sat for a week.
I had one slow crank, didn't start, which pretty much never happens.
Tried it again and it was flooded.
Got a new battery, deflood procedure, and back to normal.

I did say get it checked.
Don't buy a new battery without knowing it's bad.

However, Advance Auto (warranty) checked mine and said it was good.
I disagreed, and they said they would need to charge it and check it again.
I knew it wasn't because every time I charged it, it quickly drained.
I insisted on getting a new battery because I didn't want to waste time.
They sold me a new pro rated one, iIrc, it was $70something for a $130 gold top.

I have a similar problem if anyone could help I'd appreciate it.

so I have an optima redtop battery. I just bought a new one about 2 months ago. my car has a problem where the car will unlock and I get in. The lights are working the key goes in the ignition. I go to start it. Then all of the sudden everything goes away. Every light is gone inside and outside of the car like turning the key drained all the battery. I then get it jumped with a quick 2 second jump and I plug in my Cobb access port to check the voltage right away. It's reading 14.1-14.4. I'm stumped to why the battery doesn't work sometimes and needs to be jumped even though it's fully charged. the DTC and traction control light are illuminated after I start the car. The car did not reset because the stations are still there the clock is correct as well. The trip meters are also still as they were before.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Be sure your terminals are clean and tight.
The terminals can stretch over time and even though the bolt is completely tight, it can be loose.
You can shim it, or buy little post caps to take up the slack.
You can also check that your grounds are not loose or corroded.

The terminals were tight. I ended up cleaning the terminals up and each wire that connects to the battery. I also put metal inside of the terminals to make them tighter fit. I'll update here if needed. The problem has happened a few times over the recent weeks so I'll report back in a few days if I'm still having issues.

thank you guys for the help. I wasn't sure that could be the issue but hey could have been but now I cleaned them.
