RX8 LED Install (Warning Lights-ABS Warning Light/TCS/DSC Indicator/No Cruise Contr)

2005 Mazda rx8,
Recently installed the following LEDS from RotaryFx.com
  • Tail Light Super Bright LED Bulb Set
  • Side-Marker Super Bright LED Light Set
  • Interior LED Light Set (Doors & Dome)
  • LED Map Light Set
  • Glove Box LED Light Bulb
Recently installed the following from Lebren.com
  • Rotor Accent Light - Smoked Grey
*No problems so far car runs great only warning light is the check engine light due to the removal of the mid-pipe and install of the Racing Beat Resonated Race Pipe (confirmed warning light is due to lean mix with OBD II reader).

Then installed the following from dashzracing.com
  • Mazda RX8 Smoke Housing LED 3rd Brake Light
    • Wired to break lights (driver side)
*Once this was installed the following occurs only when I turn the lights on
  • ABS Warning Light
  • TCS/DSC Indicator
*Warning lights only come on if the car is in park before I turn the light switch on. If I am in motion no warning lights. Once warning lights appear cruise control cannot be engaged. If the car is in motion and I turn the lights on cruise control disengages

Then installed the following from dashzracing.com
  • Mazda RX8 Hi-Power LED Daytime Running Lights - Ultra Bright 8 LED
    • Wired to fog light switch
*Warning lights come on regardless if the car is in park or in motion and cruise control will not engage (when lights are on). Cruise control will also disengage if lights are turned on when cruise control is on.
Found this interesting if I put my foot on the break when I turn the lights on, in park, no warning lights. When my foot comes of the break warning lights turn on and will not re-set until the car is turned off. If I remove the 3rd brake light and daytime running lights car runs great.
So I know the simple answer is to remove the lights, however my curiosity won’t let me do it. So I am in the process of working through this to figure out why the last 2 LED light installs would cause the cruise control to disengage and warning lights to appear.

Any thoughts from anyone?

Nothing new here.
If you replace the taillights and the 3rd brake light at the same time with LED, you'll get the ABS/DSC light illuminated.

You either have to install a load resistor parallel to the third brake light, or reinstall the incandescent bulb in the brake light to keep the warning light off.

Oh, and by the way - you could have gotten that same third brake light much cheaper on eBay...

Appreciate the quick response, ordered the resitors from rotaryfx and should have them by the end of the week to install.

One resistor should be sufficient... at least I only had to add a single wirewound resistor from Radio Shack. I believe it was a 10W.

Which resistors did you order? I can't seem to find them on the site.

Quick and cheap alternative solution to those load resistors: just use one of these and bend some galvanized pipe strap for mounting. The result is shown at the end of this DIY thread.

If you want to buy specific load resistors, here are the links:
http://www.rotaryfx.com/product_p/lig1035.htm
http://www.v-leds.com/BlinkerWarning...40218-1-2.html

One of them should be enough for the 3rd brake light.

Thumbs up Follow up (success)

Appreciate the links. I went with ordering the resitors from the rotaryfx.com web side labeled for the turn signal ( Turn-Signal Bulb Load Resistor Set (Set of 2). Got the order in 3 days, installed it last night took 5 min once I had the trunk liner off (that took 10min). Worked like a charm no more warning lights and cruise control is back on line. Appreciate the assist.

I know this is old but yea I just ran into the same problem, I have a 3 LED brake lebren light which both worked fine together but as soon as i added the rotaryfx rear LED lights all hell broke ABS light is on and I can hear the unit making some strange noises when Im below 3 RPMS very strange and kinda of scary and this only occurs when the lights are on, so I ordered some load resistors from superbrightleds.com and hopefully they will be here monday morning but, the lights do look you beautiful though just not comfortable driving at night scared the ABS might explode and me along with it in a fiery crimson noir death not cool LOL but anyways I will post post pics of my rear LED set up and resistors here once everything is cleared up.

They are under the lighting section on the main page.
"Turn-Signal Bulb Load Resistor Set (Set of 2)" (http://www.rotaryfx.com/product_p/lig1035.htm) $18.99

I know this is an old post.... but I came across it via a Google search.

THANK YOU..... I would never have thought that the reduced resistance from the LED lights would cause so much havoc with other systems like that. Maybe the smart charge system, but not the ABS, TCS, or DSC.

It did mention in the instruction manual that a weak battery could result in those systems disabling. But from the third-brake light..... never would have guessed.

This should be a sticky.....
Again, thank you so much.

Yes, this is still a very relevant thread for those installing LEDs. Thanks much, Tamas. A true Rx8 Lunatic!
