I have a 2004 RX-8 with 56K miles on it. My Check Engine Light will randomly flash for a few seconds when I red line the car. I cannot get it to happen on a regular basis or find any pattern of when it happens. Sometimes I will red line it and the the CEL will not come on, other times it will flash for a few second and then turn off.

I asked the dealer about it and they told me that they tried to pull the CEL codes but none were stored in the computer.

From reading on this forum the couple second CEL light seems to be a misfire. Please let me know if I am not correct on this. If it is a random misfire, what can I do to fix it? Would it be the standard change coils, change spark plugs..etc and see if it goes away?

The car runs fine otherwise.

I actually have had these random missfires for at least a few months now and the dealer recently checked the computer and there were no codes stored.

So does it make sense that the car would missfire a bunch of times and store no codes?

 

doesnt matter. flashing light means misfire.

 

they will store a pending code but if the misfire doesnt happened again within a certain amount of time the pending code will be erased.
