My dealer called me. If there is no damage, they can get the blanket on and have the car to me by this evening. If any parts need replacing then I'll get the car tomorrow.

Woohoo!!!

I hope everybody else who is waiting also starts to get good news like this from their dealers soon as well.

I just got off the phone with my dealer's service department. They do not have a record of my car being inspected. At my request he will check with the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership (she is off today, returning tomorrow). If a claim exists for my car, then it's just a missing sticker and that should be able to be mailed to me and I'll "stick it" myself. Otherwise, it's indication that they released a car to me prior to it going through the procedure (or, maybe it went through the procedure but it escaped all documentation steps). If the latter, I'm going to have a word with their service manager, armed with the MNAO "suspend delivery" letter (complete with the threat of fines) and see if he (or she) can explain how that was allowed to happen...
The info is up on NHTSA.GOV as well . . .

Group 1 fuel tank inspec:
Lower the front of the tank and look for deformation or wrinkling along the seam. If damaged, replace tank. If not damaged, install heat insulation pad over the hump in the tank between the tank and the body. (Very specific instructions are supplied for fitment of this pad....).
Ok, I've got a question about the group 1 fuel tank inspection.

Is the picture below what they're looking for?
The description above sounds like it would be on the top part of the tank (need to remove it and place pad b/w body). Also, The picture is another member's car (hardhitter's) and somebody said the deformation was normal. I don't remember noticing it on my car.

Also, anybody with the RP shortshifter remember if the plastic piece is the same as the stock one or is it different? May need a replacement if it's damaged.

To the pic above that looks more like a dent cause by road debries being kicked back up.

It is the top but perhaps not what you are thinking in ways of the very top. Instead it is the top portion of the arch where the exhaust feeds between the gas tank.



The pad is placed between the metal insulator and the actual tank. What they are looking for when they remove the tank is if the normal gap is changed in size or otherwise changed.

The deformation the dealers are inspecting for is deformation of the seam that joins the top and bottom half of the plastic tank. Not that dent you have pictured.

I have Richards shifter fitted and Richard provides his own "pivot cage", it is different to the Mazda piece. If you're worried that it may be deformed, pull it out and inspect it!

So I did a quick search of the NHSTA site and it revealed 4 recalls for 2004 models and 1 recall for 2005.

Does anyone know how long the recall is meant to take. I keep hearing people talka about getting rental cars like it will be a while for it to be done and when I called the guy said it would be an hour to do.

Things are looking up, I think. Salesman just called and they have the heat blankets in. Now, they are awaiting the install instructions which are to be faxed. Hoping to have car tomorrow.

they already have the recall instructions. they cdont need to be faxed because they can get tehm the same site they get all tsb info from. morons

Actually, I faxed them the instructions at their request. I was talking to the Mazda technician and he said that every time he pulled up the instructions he got one that was 7 pages long. This was yesterday. So I faxed him the instructions. Then magically, within half an hour they got the instructions through the Mazda system.

So Faxing worked for me. It made them find the instructions

BTW, I am pretty sure it was not the dealer being a pain in the ****, because the guy was on the phone real-time with me when he was trying to access the instructions. He tried several times. Maybe its their comuter system or something, but it was not the tech being difficult.

I'll sum up my post with couple of lines, read the rest of the thread if my initial question has merit:

The behavior described in the recall notice (revving the engine while parked) doesn't seem like something many (if any) people would do. Why is this the only behavior listed in the recall? Are there other, more likely, circumstances that could cause the same issues? Why hasn't Mazda acknowledged those?



Here are my more specific questions:

1) It seems like Gomez had it on good authority that flooding and running the car with raw fuel in the cats could cause the same problems listed in the recall. My question then is why isn't flooding mentioned in the recall? I find it hard to believe that there are many people who stop and rev the engine to high RPMs for extended periods, but I imagine a lot of people are experiencing the type of damage described in the recall.

2) Aside from revving while parked for extended periods and (maybe) idling after flooding, are there any other conditions that could have led to excessive heat in the exhaust, resulting in similar damage? I spent quite a bit of time in the mountains (lots of steep climbs) in high ambient temperatures (90 degrees F) at relatively high RPMs (6-9K) in 2nd and 3rd gear. I've begun to wonder- could having a low level of gas in the tank (therefore making it easier to heat the tank) and 'spirited' driving combine to create similar symptoms?

I'm sure I'll find out more when I go in for the recall. I'm fairly certain that my car was flooded on the dealer lot before I bought it. I know that I've driven the car pretty fast now and again in hot weather. I also know that I've never sat in a parking lot or at a stop light and revved the engine.

I'm interested in hearing thoughts on this from the experts.

i'd guess no, because when you are driving, there is sufficient air flow to help keep the parts cool.

i stated this before but let me try one more time.

this issue is caused by a particular set of circumstances. those circumstances cause the pcm to go into a protection mode where it sets a high rpm idle.

when jump starting the car it can trip this self protection feature. because people who have just jump started their car think it will help charge the battery they let the high idle go on. this causes the high under car heat.

when gomez stated it was linked to flooding its because flooded rx-8s with the weak stock battery tend to need jump starting if they have been cranked alot already. this exacberates the under car heat because the extra fuel fromteh flood gets ignited in the cat.

josche i dont believe the situation you describe could cause the conditions because you are moving. the behaviour that is listed int eh recall is the behavior that causes the issue and ther e is not any "more likely" circumstances that will cause it.

kevin i dont believe a dyno could cause the situation. the dyno run "could" possibly trip the self protection mode but then everyone would notice the car set its rpm and your dyno capability would end. so you would shut the car off instead of letting it sit and idle. plus i dont know how many people spend a half an hour running continuous on the dyno with out fans
