[FONT=Comic Sans MS]I guess its no longer a figment of my imagination that the trunk space on my RX8 seems unnaturally hot.

I find it fascinating that the Repair Procedure - Inspection - step 2 says that if the grommets are not damaged, then don't bother with the tank inspection and go directly to the reflash. That seems on the surface to be very presumptuous?

Sitting on the dock of the bay, zoom 44? Gawd hehe..

They've gotten it to the point where a simple ECU flash will accomplish what would've taken parts-swapping in the older injection cars, and hours upon hours with a screwdriver and a length of hose with a carb'd car.

You can thank the gub'mint for all this emissions-control. Trust me. It's a lot better today than it was 20 years ago. Let's not even discuss cars from 30 years ago. Stuff of nightmares.
Well.. not quite that far back, but I do long for the days of the 88 cars when you could bolt on a few extra horses. I also long for the days of the rotor housing exhaust, when CARB didn't dictate emissions policy. I remember when you actually could get 200k out of your 84 GSLSE or 88 Convertable. If they had an 89 motor with mechanical oil metering in the 3rd gen we still would have the 7 and motors would last the 200k we all read about. Renesis has pumped 50 extra HP from the days of older rotaries, and that is a major engineering feat in itself. It just looks like the technology has hit a brick wall with reguard to HP. All and all it's a pretty nice package. They need to offer the *high* hp motor in the auto shift car. Rotary automatic shift is the way to go.. Remember the *Cosmo* ?? True rotary luxury.

Screw it. Just give us 3 rotors in an 8 and sell it for an extra $5k. I'm sure it would sell. I would buy it.

im sort of wondering why standing still at high revs makes this worse then just driving at high rpm. I mean I doubt there’s that much air getting to that specific area while your moving, and once your exhaust is at temperature I would think that they stay at a pretty constant temperature moving or not.

Also I'm assuming the new parts for group one have some sort of modification to the tank that makes them resistant to this type of damage, what im concerned with is what there doing with the reflash.... The only way to make exhaust temps cooler is richening the mixture which isn't what we need.

we have a right to know what these flashes do its rather frustrating.....

You need to re-read my posts...your concerns have been answered earlier in this thread. BTW, there is a hell of a lot of air movement under the car at speed.

My guess is that the grommets are made of a weaker plastic compared to the gas tank. So if heat was an issue, the grommets are the first things to go. But then again, that procedure is just for new unsold cars. The group one inspection could be much more involved.

I think it is more like this...

If the muffler filled with fuel and melted the body plugs there is a great chance the car has flooded at some point.

The retailed car inspection process we be similar to the dealer vehicles.

Thanks Gomez for keeping us up to date on this issue.

If MM keeps the nomenclature for the 2004 cars, the "R" for the hipower is outdated.
SW-N3Z1ES000 has arrived at the motorcraftreprogrammingpage.
But no SW-N3Z2... for the AT.

Any new information on the Group 1 cars? I visited my baby twice this weekend, we are both getting very antsy. It gets me worked up every time because, I know I have to leave it in the lot.

Parting is such sweet sorrow.

polak and others-

i was wrong! shocking i know it is S flash for 2004 cars SW-N3Z1ES000. and i think i know the change it makes but i need to check. if im correct it removes an action that could cause a high idle in the first place

I may just have to get a sportbike and keep the car in "summer storage" .
Shouldn't your exhaust be cooler than a NA?

I appreciate all the info that is being shared on this thread. It is one thing about owning the 8 that makes it so cool.
The underbody temps have to be high in hot climates--thats common sense. But the heat that is causing the problems are from the fuel burn off in the cat/pipe/muffler due to flooding or near flooding? Hmmm. So cat damage may be prevalant in many more cars than previously thought? Someone educate me here. Is a cat one of those things that either works or dont work? Can you have a partial decompensation?
I know my RB cat back has clouded this issue for me(thanks for that info) I remember when I had the stock muffler on and it was much hotter under the back of the car then.
I also wonder with the cz unit and people leaning out the a/f ratios whether that had a good affect or a bad one. I know Mazda is saying low speed high rpm stuff and cz really doesnt work til you get into open loop mode but at this point I guess it is just natural to wonder about that.
Wouldnt it be nice for them to put a high flow cat on for us and leave the stock catback on? (Much quieter that way) With the freer flow maybe the temps would go down?
I have been under my car a bit and it already has a good bit of shielding in place. Sure gets hot in the console and ashtray area when you drive around town. There is a big differance in airflow with this car under 50mph/stop and go and over 50mph cruising.
I await the plan for the group 1 cars!

I'm no expert, but from my experiences cats, can go bad over time and eventually get plugged up to where no exhaust flows.. I had cars where the cat was so hot they would glow red at night and catch grass on fire. Other's just lose thier elements and don't clean much air and rattle.

The only piece of stock plumbing left on my car is the exhaust manifold log. I wonder what temps I am running at the back end? I'm doing a visual tonight and se what I can find. I also need to schedule the 30K service, and I am Group 1. I don't want the dealer nabbing my car for a few days

I'll go talk to my little birdie and see what he says

It's been about 105F+ for the last week I sure hope my gas tank doesn't melt and my rx8 explode that would SUCK.
