I did much searching on the board and on google, and found some recommendations, but nothing that solves my problem.

While the car is making a transition (mostly left to right and right to left, but sometimes front to back/back to front), i hear a popping noise coming from the front left wheel area. This only started happening a month ago, and since the first time it happened, its easier to replicate, and a bit louder than when it started. It reminded me of when the front swaybar was loose in the Miata. I'm usually going less than 10mph when this happens. Sometimes I can be parking or going up a drive way and it will still happen.

Turning the wheel while stationary didn't replicate the noise. I tried to push down on the front left, and i was unable to replicate the noise.

At first I tried to tighten the front sway bar, but it was very tight. I checked the shocks to see if any oil was on the springs, but I couldn't find any. I bent the brake shield a bit away from the rotor, and it didn't fix it. I also tightened the lugs to 108ftlbs, and that didn't help either.

I thought it may have been the rusty brake rotor TSB, but Unfortunately I don't have a jack right now (just ramps), so I can't perform that TSB myself. However, I did tighten the lugs to 108ftlbs.

Any ideas?


EDIT: Suspension is stock. Tires = 245/40/18 Kumho MXs, stock 18" wheels. Noise started at about 42k miles, car has about 44k miles now.

 

While you were checking the sway bar, did you check the end links? they have tendency to pop when loose. Do you have aftermarket springs? Some people with aftermarket springs here have noticed clunking during low speed turns.

 

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The car's suspension is stock, 18" wheels, running 245/40/18 Kumho MXs. I did check the end links, and they were pretty tight on both ends.

 

Only thing else I can think of is blown struts sometimes pop. that's about all the use you'll get out of me on this. sorry

 

Thanks for your help. I thought it may have been the shocks too, but I don't see any leakage on the springs or the boot.

If it is broken, gives me a good excuse to run Koni Adjustables all around

However, I am still looking for a solution. I rather not have to swap out shocks unless I know they are blown. The car is about 44k miles on it, noise started at about 42k miles.

 

check the bolts that hold the sway bushings. while you are down there lube the bushings...

i am getting the same thing, but i have changed springs and shocks. and recently replaced a shock, pretty sure something is not tight enough..

I've heard this before when the upper spring seat gets turned slightly or the top bushing gets doubled under the seat.
Anybody drop your front shocks?

 

This Sunday I'll play with the car a bit. I have more access to tools now.

The suspension is still stock, I don't think the previous owner has played with the shocks any.

usually shock and spring issues will make noise while going straight over bumps too, not just turning

I would check your control arm bolts and make sure they're fully tightened

 

Check your headlight leveling sensor too, I don't know if they wear out but they have an end link just like the sway bars.

 

i did my tbs recall on the rim surface. the noise went off for the morning and afternoon its back. i suspect something is loose.

 

mechanic say it might be due to uneven surface of rotor and brake pad. possible?

 

i think i know whats wrong with the TBS fix i made.
i clean up the 2 surface, the brake dics and the rims back surface, but i didn't give a surface for it to grip, i did not use #100 sand paper and scratch the surface for grip. which i think the old ones are gone.

 

tried to scratch the surface today again and it doesn't help.

 

going to try change the rim front to back.

 

didn't work. help!

 

Gentlemen,

I have a similar sound that happens when I accellerate going uphill making a sharp left turn (have no idea if it would do so making a right turn, as I make the left to get to my house!).

I was hoping that this TSB would remedy the problem:

I am going to have it handled when I go in for the recall. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Are we talking about the same thing? Forgive me if I'm missing something. I'm showing my ignorance with all things mechanical, most likely. Just trying to help.

Micheal i did the same recall. but its still there. then...

hey guys if u happen have the " tok tok or kok kok" sound under 10km/h on the wheel. check your dics rotor. it might cause by uneven brake dics. i skim my dics and i fixed mine finally!

 

after a few drive. the nioise is still there, but minor.

 

i did my rotor skiming and the sound reduced, but after a few drive its back. and this time i found that when i brake and drive slow the sound appear but not as loud when i release the brake totally without pressing on the fuel. so i think is the brake.

 

Hope you get it figured out soon. Let us know what it ends up being if you think of it.

ok found the problem. finally after all these time. it was the absorber. i am not sure whether it had been broken or just ran out of grease. i remove the palstic cover and just spray some WD40 anti corrotion spray into the bottom part of the absorber and everything seem fine. not even a sound. u guys know the hole around the centre absorber rod.

i am not sure whether there is a screw which we can renew the grease like subaru's absorber. and whether the absorber is servicable or not.

 

the plastic cover...do you mean you removed the dust boot? I also have this popping noise now turning at low speeds from the front right.

 

no, its not removing the dust boot, not the plastic cover.

basically what i do is remove the rim, just spray some anti rust oil into the absorber lower part, where the gap around the absorber rod. i think it will be more efficient with grease. about the plastic cover u just need to push it upward to do this, u do not need to remove it.
