P0420 Catalytic Converter?
My CEL has been on and off, I finally got the codes read while it was on and received the P0420 error. I have read about this on the forum, and it looks like I am going to have to replace the cat.
I was just about to sell this car! The dealership wants $1100 just for the part (rosenthal).
Here is my question:
Is there anything else it could be that is causing this code?
Whats the cheapest cat available that I can put on this car and will not receive a CEL?
Thanks,
Matt
EDIT: I have 85,000 miles so it is not covered under warranty right?

Yes, I just got off the phone with Mazda North America and they confirmed that. They are going to talk to the dealership and see what they can do. My argument with them is that there was a voluntary Emission Recall back in August of 2006 (4206F) that stated the catalytic converter may be degraded in some vehicles. My car was serviced for this recall but the cat was not replaced.
I refuse to spend $1100 on a cat. Ridiculous.
So if Mazda won't cover it then I need some recommendations on a inexpensive aftermarket solution that will not cause a CEL or emission problems.

Awesome, I have access to a lift so it should be pretty easy to install. So does this replace the resonator then or does it bolt onto it?

I would still try to get the dealership to replace it under warranty but if you can't, the RP is a great alternative.
I have it on my car and it's awesome

Ok. Will do. From what I have read though it sounds like the RP supercat shouldn't throw any CEL's. I honestly would have just driven it with the CEL, I could careless if the CAT is hollow or not, but I am getting ready to sell it and it needs to pass emissions. I was looking at buying a new mazda but I'm not sure what I am going to do now after this whole experience.
The worst part is that the new owner is going to get to enjoy this new RP supercat....I might have to keep my 8 for another month or so now
