so i'm installing a revi intake and as i inspected the stock air box, i found that half of the air filter is soaked with engine oil. i searched for this problem but did not find any on this site. am i the only 8 owner that experienced this? anybody want to clue me in?

bonus question: to those that have the revi, you guys had to take the bumper off to take out the stock air duct so the revi box would fit right? bought mine used and didn't come with instructions.

got it installed! sounds nice especially in the 4500 to 9k range. throttle response greatly improved especially after taking out the stock air filter that was soaked in engine oil.

While I am not disputing that overfilling could do it, the two times it happened to me were both during spirited driving, on slight uphill, at about 6000RPM while shifting quickly lanes. I bet I can duplicate it on that specific highway :o)
Also, it does indeed come most likely from the top tube (oil filler neck tube). At least the second time it did.
Murphy law says: if you already have a catch can on two lower tubes coming from the engine, then the next time, the mess will come through the third one.
I could have laugh if the cleaning was not so tough... 2 days to get everything squeak clean. I re-routed the top tube through the catch can and put back in the intake the tube coming from the bottom of the engine. I always change my own oil and I never overfill it - nor did the two oil waves come within 1000 miles of the previous oil change.
Also, when it happened, the car lost instantly most of the power, the CEL started to blink, and I was hardly cruising for about 10 seconds. Then everything went back to normal, power came back and CEL went away. Did clean the MAF but it was not too bad after driving several miles after the incidents.
Maybe of importance: the first time I still had the stock filter, the second time I had the K&N drop-in filter (and did not waste my time to go to the dealer like the first time). They kept saying it was just blow-by (because I had to clean it to get there first time). Right - 500mL of blow-by, all at once. Don't waste your time - eBay is your dear friend for this one - can even find a shinny catch can that says Mazdaspeed on it for $30. No solution/fix - just prevent the effect it has with a catch can (route all 3 tubes, to be sure).

my experience (by watching my catch can tubes) has shown its not only the filling that causes the problem, its also just running at high rpms with the oil level at or slightly above the FULL mark

i thought that it was also blow by, (i call it blow back, don't know if that's an appropriate term now), but the amount of oil on my air filter was considerable. i also suspected that the cause was overfilling it with oil. i just ordered a catch can but im still pondering where to put it as there is no room in the engine bay. im thinking of attaching it to the revi air box but don't know if that will cause problems.
