OBD scan tool preferences for misfire troubleshooting
I'm looking at both the OBDLink tool (USB or Bluetooth) and the OBDScan tool. Both have freeze frame data, DTC, and datalogging capabilities that would be useful for troubleshooting my P0302 misfire issue.
Is there a preference between these two? Or are there other options I should consider?
OBDLink? - Diagnostic Scan Tools for Android, iOS, & Windows | OBDLink? | OBD Solutions
OBDScan

I personally use this Bluetooth device:
And pair that with Torque on my smartphone.
I prefer this vs running the software on a laptop because I always have my phone with me and the dongle is small enough to throw in the glove compartment for when I need it.
Here is a demo video of the device:
Not trying to steer you away from the devices you suggested, just explaining my setup and what I've used.
But I do like the Bluetooth capability and convenience.

Jon316G, that device looks like it'd get the job done, and would be a much lower-cost option when paired with Torque.
I shyed away from wireless because I thought it may not be as fast as a cable connection; has this seemed like an issue?
Just to confirm; if the ECU stores freeze frame data during a misfire, can Torque read and display? Can torque data log?
Thanks again for the helpful advice above. I think i'll probably go the route you've gone.

I honestly use my AccessPORT for data logging and everything else with the RX8 and use the bluetooth device for the other vehicles.
So you might want to do your research on that device before purchasing to ensure it does what you need.
But its also inexpensive enough to have around for other vehicles you might want to read data from or check/clear CEL.

from my research, torque does a poor job of freeze frame data, but many other softwares such as OBDwiz and ScanXL do access freeze frames.

I ended up getting the OBDLink SX cable that connects via USB. I have been able to pull freeze frame data and do data logging. It was about $35 shipped and came with OBDWiz software. Overall seems to be a decent package.
