No engine turnover after side impact
Hi All,
I unfortunately had a side on with a lamp post the other week which deployed both the curtain and passenger seat airbags.. directly after the impact the engine remained running, I turned it off tried starting again but no response? have since checked the fuse boxes under the bonnet and relays also the fuse box in the passenger footwell..
I really want to get my baby back on the road which needs a new wing and door! however this is giving me a headache

There IS a safety engine cut-off with air bag deployment. Not sure how to get around it though.
I remembered this article in which the author had a similar accident, (http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/201...our-the-event/) but his re-started within a few hours or so, so might not be the case for yours if it's been a week or more.

The process is:
1: Key in
2: Clutch in
3: clutch sensor closes the circuit allowing start
4: Key to start
5: Starting relay opens, providing power to the starter from the battery
6: Battery power cranks over the starter motor
7: Starter motor spins the engine through the flywheel
8: Ignition opens
9: Coils get power, begin generating spark current
10: Wires transmit the current to the plugs
11: Plugs begin to spark
12: Fuel pump begins pumping
13: Engine standard compression and combustion should occur
It is possible for a no-start condition to be due to a failure at any one of the above points.

From your list I get to point 6 that is all..
I have lights on the dash however when I attempt to 'turn the engine over' it won't.. I was thinking it may be a fuel cut off switch however I'm starting to think these don't have one?

So you hear the starter motor spinning, but the engine is not cranking?
Can you have someone watch the main pulley with the hood open to tell you if the engine is or is not rotating?

No the motor isn't spinning, basically when the key is turned to 'Ign' you can hear what sounds like the fuel pump or something 'click in' and several other 'clicks' then when the key is turned to start the engine nothing happens?
Its almost like there is something electrical stopping the engine crank because the airbags have been deployed?

I'd check the wiring above the pedals. Specifically find the clutch pedal switch for the starter interlock. See if that got dislodged in the crash.
I'm not finding much on a direct connection to the crash.
Other "normal" issues (not related to crashing) for stopping at that step are:
- Bad battery ground
- Fuse blown (several possibilities that will prevent the engine from starting, make sure you check both panels, the engine bay and the one next to the dead pedal at the driver's feet)
- relay failed

The starter motor hangs pretty low in the chassis. Depending on debris or what have you from the accident, Its possible something kicked up and knocked a wire off the starter. Especially if the accident was on the left side of the car.

Thanks for the advice I'll take a look around the pedals and under the car at the starter once I finish work!
It was the result of trying to save a few quid buying budget tyres insted of decent ones! :-/

Got the car started tonight thank you so much! had a look under the car and found the wires on the starter motor were ripped off, a little work and a few choc blocks later she fired up! this is what fourms are all about love you all

Hey ... I had a small accident where my cross member under th car caught a stump in my driveway ... Hit really hard about 10mph ... No airbags deployed ... Wondering if a fuel cut off switched could have bn tripped because the car will run when ether sprayed into intake but it won't crank and stay running on its own ...
