Unhappy New 2010 Mazda only 280 km per tank!

Hi people,

I just got a new 2010 Mazda RX8. I love it!!! Driving is pure pleasure. But the gas only lasted like 280km with full tank!!??! Is this normal??? and yes I drove it at high revs like 8000rpm. Still I was expecting around 350km. Some people also say that I need to drive at least a 1000km for it to burn less. What do you think? 280km per tank in my opinion is really not that much at all...

if your keeping it reved up like that i would say that 5.5->6.5km/l (i did the conversion from mpg in my head so i may be off)

also i dont know if there is much a diff between the SII and SI for fuel milage....

edit: did a quick search and found this thread....
https://www.rx8club.com/canada-forum-35/km-l-mpg-27492/

looks like they are getting between 300-400km so if you were keeping it in the high rev range a i would say 280 isnt improbable.

Yes that is normal mileage if you keep it at high revs. I average 350km per tank on normal city driving, 420-ish highway -- less when driving it hard. Most I ever hit (cruise control at 100km/h, flat highway) was 500km and I was on fumes.

If you're worried about fuel consumption, bring it back, you got the wrong car. It's best not to think about it and just enjoy the ride.

Unless it is being used only for racing, I'm curious to know why you feel the need to always rev it that high? Occasionally for carbon clearing, for fun, for entering roadways, etc., but all the time??

In my daily 100 km commute, my 2009 A/T is averaging over 500 km per tank without any extraordinary techniques other than slightly higher tire pressures.

I just got the car It is brand new! I love the sound of the engine. However, of course, I will not drive it like this all the time. Just for fun for the first time usage only (until the first tank is depleted. Actually, I don't let the engine stay at high revs. I just push it to a high rev, then shift to the next gear.

Poor engine, high revs and no break-in...

Mate..IMO if you are revving it that high when brand new you are looking for trouble..

I was getting 520 KMS a tank when running in, no higher than 5000 RPM.

BTW..I now get 440-460 KMS a Tank, 50:50 Metro and Highway use....a few red-lines a day, gear changes at 5 or 6 k, sometimes 4 k in traffic, 50% of time at 3000 RPM because of traffic.

I don't change back in gears to brake, if you are a down-shifter you will use more gas.

Rotary engine break-in procedure is very controversial. Some say drive it hard from day one, some say break it in for 600-3000 miles. Personally, I will listen to Pettit and Racing Beat I broke mine in for 3000 miles. It was the longest 3 weeks of my life. I drove a lot just so I could redline again.

Ok guys, seriously, what should I do??? Should I not shift at high revs or should I??? What is the best rpm to shift? My intention is to shift it at 4000 for regular driving. Just finished the first tank... It only went like 280 kms!! I asked the dealer about it. He said that the engine is new and as it passes a 1000kms, it will burn less. Is this true? I am actually trying to understand if something is wrong or not with the car...

Nothing wrong with the car...you have a lead foot..simple..

Back off a bit and you will get better mileage....

Think about it...if you owned any other ''performance car" and drove it like the 8, what mileage do you think you would get...it would be NO different.

Adjust your driving style...or suffer.

When you drive are you in front of a pack of cars in traffic?

Please don't start ranting or blaming the "product" because you don't get what you want.

Cruise around for a bit lol. Shifting at high RPM's is cool but not to much when you are just breaking it in. I would hate to see a brand new 8 with a dead renesis....
