the colder the car is the longer it takes to warm up - the longer it takes to warm up the longer it stays in open loop. the longer it stays in open loop the worse mpg you get. do you have a garage?

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IS LEAVE TEH CAR WITH THEM SO THEY CAN DO AN ACTUAL MPG TEST DRIVE. there are many things they can check also- as i learned a little while ago one main thing is to check the tstat. also how cold has it been in your area and do you have oxygenated gas? have you ever done a whole long highway trip?

Yes sir. Unheated. Use a block heater if it gets real cold. My mpg numbers should be better. I'll let it go for a while and do a few more computations before crying to the service department though. Right now I'm happy that there's been an improvement.

What is your gas mileage?

I see that in several threads people say that getting very low gas milage is rare. I think it might be interesting to know just how rare it is. I'd like to see similar polls with transmission and flooding problems.

Howard,
You've heard from me before. I'm also getting poor milage. I just filled up with 14.1 gal. 160 miles on the tank.
I took the car into the dealer Thursday for a intermittant flashing CEL and a constant CEL. I also reported the milage problem. The service ticket reported that they flashed the ECU to take care of the milage problem. The spark plugs were replaced to take care of the CEL (intermittant missfire problem).
The car feels a little more peppy, but I dought that the milage will become normal (?).

I get about 200 miles per tank, but my driving is either in rush hour traffic, or going at 70-120 mph, so I haven't been expecting 20 mpg.

One of these days I will go on a road trip and see what the highway mileage is on my car... right now I've had it almost a year, around 10,500 miles, and have no clue about mileage other than city.

120mph?! NICE!!

I've actually lessened my aggression on the road lately--ok ok, so it's due to the fact that I got pulled over twice for speeding in a 24-hour period!--and my mileage has improved somewhat significantly as a result. I was hitting around maybe 180-200 miles per tank. With little to no aggressive speeding and consciously attempting to shift around 3,500 rpms, I can get around 260-280 miles.

I usually get right around 20 mpg (~270 per tank) with suburban "around the city" driving.

Griffin GA! Welcome to the RX8 club. If you ever find yourself in NW Atlanta, look out for a titanium grey 8. I'll either wave or flash my lights.

100 miles on 1/4 tank?? What were you going 45mph the whole way? Odd, when I was first breaking in my car, I had horrendous gas mileage.

In addition, the car seems to burn extremely rich when hovering down near the 0 degree mark. My car has been in the garage for two weeks and when I started it yesterday the exhaust was so thick it fumagated my garage. I guess it must really pump when the weather gets this cold. NY has been bitter cold the last week.

Thanks Mark...No I was going w/ the flow of traffic. I work in Buckhead and picked it up today from Team Mazda on Thornton Road, so I was keeping a decent speed. I DID NOT go over 4000 RPM's though.

BTW...mine is nordic green. Haven't seen too many so if you see one, it'll probably be me.

I have recently decided after breaking the 7,000 mile mark to track my milage. So far on my first tank I turned just over 18 mpg in the city (about 70% city driving) and having some "spirited" driving. I will post more after a few more tanks of gas.

AT RX-8, 3200 miles, 75% city driving, getting 15 MPG. I shift at 3000-3500 RPMs mostly, with maybe a 5k - redline run once or twice a day. I'd try running the car in full auto mode to see how it'd do, but the car just bucks like a bronco too much when traveling at low speeds in 3rd or 4th gear.

Right around 13 mpg consistently, 6-speed MT, latest PCM flash (I don't remember it being any different with previous flashes though) and pretty much 99% around-town driving. I don't drive crazily but I just don't feel comfortable stoplight to stoplight shifting at <4K so I'm probably my own worst enemy.

19.386 mpg with a standard deviation of 2.1006.

My max has been 23.712 during a long distance trip. If you would like to see a graph, I've been keeping gas milage off every tank since 2/26/04.

i on a good tank get about 150-160 miles... shitty yes i know, this tank i am not reving the car over 3500 at all to see how the different driving effects it. as of now i have gone through a 1/4 tank and have about 30 miles
hahahaha....and the tach has not even seen above 3500 on this, i am shifting at 3000 for the most part, probably about 95% of the time.

I get 17mpg around town and have some fun reving it too. I have got 20mpg around town taking it easier. The high as 29.5mpg on the hwy in the slow lane with the trucks, but its no fun and takes a lot of disipline!

I've had mine about a week, and filled up twice. first tank was 17.8 miles (per gallon), the second was 16.xx

no complaints. I am sure on the highway I could get much more.

I guess I thought the rotary was a more fuel-efficient engine.
I'd figured more of you guys would be getting around 20+ mpg.

Mine's not much better at 20mpg MAX!!!

It's interesting seeing the poll results. I'm not going to complain anymore about filling the car up. I'm happy.
