misfire frustrations

well guys i took your advice and bought coil and plugs.
i thought this would slove my current misfire issue but i feel that it hasnt.
reason being my cel is flashing at random rpms when im crusing, but actually gunning it, it stays solid. ex. today i put them in went for a spirted drive and good until i traveled maybe 5 miles at the time i was crusing and flashing cel. 2 1/2 to above 3 1/2 crusing its flashing, but if i accelerate going to 4 to 5 rpms no flashing until later when im crusing. any ideas? would the wires be at fault? i have an 04 rx8 gt 52,xxx miles.

Please give us the history on your car. The service it's had parts replaced. Did you do all four coils , wires and plugs? Type of driving it gets(long commutes, short trip), fuel used(reg or prem), ever flooded, mods installed. Just any thing that you can add.

i replaced all four coils, and 4 plugs, and recently a motor mount, never flooded, i have an aem cai and a exoticspeed catback and a ap crank pulley thats it. i have always used premium no matter what the price. i do a mixture of both long communtes to work(well to me its kinda long, 20 mins) and i also love to drive so i do short around the city. always do my oil changes every 2500-3000 miles. never changed the wires. anything else you may need to know?

I would change wires and check all connection you have touched lately as well as plug tightness. Have reset ECU? Or a couple of cans of de-carbon cleaner(Seafoam or BG44K) might improve compression. This is just a start look at the bottom of the page for some more ideas.

i made sure the plugs were tight when i installed them, i havent reset the ecu yet but im about to disconnect the battery for 15mins. ive never cleaned my engine i was thinking about getting a compression test at the dealership they charge $102 cause they run the zoom zoom cleaner. n yeah i'll take a look below hopefully something related.
oh i have the wires on order so soon i'll have them, and ive checked the connections.

What are the codes you need to get them read. When you get this missing problem do you have loss of power? At the bottom(page 15) of the "TSB" on the de-carbon cleaning it says N/C if less than 8yr or 100K miles. They will want to charge you about $700 for changing out the coils, plugs, and wires so you will need to bring in proof that you did. Bring in receipts and old parts. Also bring in a copy of this TSB if you need help to convince them.

Did you reset the ESS lately?

@!!narotordo 11-21-2009 10:51 PM

ESS? whats that? hold the trip reset and pump the brake peddle?

dannobre 11-21-2009 10:54 PM

Yep......Eccentric Shaft Position Sensor..I think the manual calls it the ESPS ;)

20+ fast pumps and watch for the sweep of the oil pressure gauge

i think that was it lol, i just got up and did the brake pedal thing went around for a drive and no misfire i held at 5k rpm nothing so today imma take it to work and keep an eye on it, will keep you guys updated thank you.

no but i swear on hot days (not even that hot) i feel really slow, so if i show them all the old parts and a copy of the tsb it'll be no charge?

ok after a day or so the misfire came back!!! :wallbash:
i bought the zoom zoom engine cleaner didnt help now im waiting for the wires, this is very frustating. :tear: atleast now the misfires dont come until 6 1/2kprm so i have more room, today i actually heard a misfire which scared me a lil i was accelerating and somewhere in the high rpm i heard like a backfire and the cel was blinking, but other than that one i havent heard or felt another just cel flashing. hopefully it hasnt become something serious.

@!!narotordo 11-24-2009 08:11 PM

Read the cel. It might be your cat!!! if not you might have to take it in for them to read and clear all the misfire codes. Thats what they did to my friends 8.

could the cat cause misfires? and read and erase codes i can do that at my job lol, its just very strange how its at high rpms now, imma but in my catless midpipe and drive it and see if the cel blinks.

@!!narotordo 11-24-2009 10:41 PM

Are you plug wires going to the right spark plugs?
Your coil set up looks like this:
Coil1 Coil2 Coil3 Coil4
Your front rotor housing has T on top and L on the bottom like this:
L1 T1 L2 T2
Or
LF TF LR TR
F = Front Rotor Housing
R = Rear Rotor Housing

Check this out

As for the cat. Well when they are clogged they tend to make the engine run hot so that might contribute to the miss fire. Its a long shot but worth it if nothing else is working in your favor.

@!!narotordo 11-24-2009 10:46 PM

Also top off your tank with 91 or 93 dont run the cheep shit that might have something to do with it too. Cheep gas sucks man. Use Shell. Put some idemitsu pre-mix in that helped me big time especially in the desert heat.

Cvzrx8 11-26-2009 05:12 PM

I checked the wires and they go where they should.
I have always used premium from valero. still waiting on the wires hopefully that'll solve this issue. i put the midpipe on and still misfiring so its not the cat causing it. getting the wires tuesday i'll keep you guys updated thanks for the effort :) happy thanksgiving guys!!!

Cvzrx8 11-26-2009 05:14 PM

one more question, could the coils in some way be faulty? and if so would they have the spots the old ones do? i havent checked the new coils just throwing this out there lol.

dozer 11-26-2009 05:15 PM

wow, new plugs and coils, and still misfiring :dunno:, better hope its a wire...make sure all the nuts on the coils are on tigh enough, and make sure the plugs are in there GOOD

check out my DIY, i have a pic on there that shows my old coils vs. my new ones, maybe that should help, and try cleaning the little metal plate where the coils are at

Have you gotten the CEL codes read yet? It may not be a misfire at all. You are assuming that since you got a blinking CEL you have a misfire. There are many reasons for this and they may not be misfires at all. You may have a vaccum leak causing a lean condition or you may have a bad intake valve (variable intake runner valve) or myriad other problems.

Go to autozone and get the code read first, Then write down the code number(s). Look them up on the forum here. Then tell us what you find out.

Cvzrx8 11-27-2009 08:46 PM

ok codes are P0302 Cylinder 2 misfire(switched from cylinder 1), P0335 crankshaft sensor malfunction(already on order) P2096 A/F feedback too lean, P2270 heated o2 sensor signal stuck lean. i think the last two are from me putting on the catless midpipe on to see if it was the cat.

I saw a mention of using 91 or 93 gas and if the OP is using anything other than 91 it's very possible low octane could be the issue. This is a high compression motor and requires 91 octane. Some people claim they get away with it but frankly the detonation issues that gas can cause isn't worth the $1 or so you save by using lower octane fuel.

Razz1 11-27-2009 10:02 PM

Don't forget to clean the MAF too........

i use 93 octane cause 91 isnt available here but my guess is 93 is better correct?
