messed up differential?

So I decided to jack up the car in order to paint my calipers. In the rear I used the point on the differential cooling fins, and I think I might have broken something. Now I am not an expert at this so I am looking for some input. Whenever I am driving and give it gas, there is a pinging noise, and as I apply more throttle, the pinging gets louder, and my seat even vibrates! Its not the brakes or engine or anything because it is only when I am accelerating, no noise if I am coasting or revving the engine. So what is the problem? And about how much to fix? Thanks guys, I am really annoyed, any help is appreciated.

To clarify, you used the cooling section of your differential housing to jack up the whole back of your car?

you need to look at the manual. that is the right spot.

Just because you are accelerating doesn't mean it can't be the brakes. Could be anything as simple as the brake sheild rubbing against something. Try to get someone to walk along side of your car while you drive up the street, have them listen close and try to isolate what section it is coming from. If it is the diff, you may hear the noise from both sides of the car, if they only hear a noise from the driver side /passenger side then it might be something else.

Sounds like the differential bracket holding it to frame could be moved somehow.

Get someone to check the position of it, and compare to a diagram.

Also, I was changing the oil and removed the front right wheel a few weeks ago, and when I went on a test drive the front right wheel would make a tick..tick..tick sound only while turning right.

WTH? Oh, yeah, I was getting tired when putting up all the tools, and FORGOT to GIVE FINAL TIGHTENING to the lugs!

Loose wheel might be your easy fix.

The description is pretty vague, but just jacking up from the diff is not going to break anything. I, and others, on this car and pretty much any other RWD have done it with no ill effects thousands of times. Now if the jack slipped off...

If you had broken something jacking the car up, you would have seen the car jerk as the portion of the car where the jack was applying pressure gave way. The other possibility is if the portion of the car only bent and did not give way; in that scenario, you would still have seen the car shift in its position. On a side note, I hope you put the car on jack stands after jacking it up. I have heard of too many stories of jacks giving way (a jack is a mechanical device after all which is doomed to fail at some point) and killing people.
