This is an interesting situation ......
If it was me I would be doing the standard inspection .....
Not saying this will solve your issues ... its just what I do when I'm trying to eliminate problems.

1) Clean MAF Sensor
2) Inspect intake screens
3) Clean Eccentric Shaft sensor (this can cause all sorts of problems if dirty)
4) Inspect plugs, in your case I might check to make sure they are actually the correct plugs
5) Check for vacuum leaks
6) Reset ECU

This is just my 2 cents....

What about the fuel pump.... losing power up hill aka under load maybe the fuel pump is failing.

 

Well Mazda have now had the car 2 days and are no closer to finding the issue. They say they checked the fuel pump and say its working correctly. They took for test drive and also had the car stall. They tell me they now have the computer in the freezer and this maybe because they think it has heat problems on the components or something. They tell me they have now done all the things that have been suggested and ran out of ideas and are now madly swapping parts from another car in there car yard which is same year as mine to see if they can narrow the issue down. Have any of you had this much trouble? The car runs ok for while then turns to **** and power goes and idle crap follows. Im at a loss now as to what to do and Mazda have had my car every week now for 3 weeks trying to sort this out.

 

What were the results of the compression ck? That could hold the answer...

 

Will have the results of the compression tests in the morning. Seems strange to me a compression issue could cause it but i guess its possible.

 

It may have something to do with it then again it could very well be the ECU...

 

Mazda dealer called this morning to tell me they found the compression was shot and seals gone and want to charge me $10,000 for new engine! I think i better take it to a rotary specialist as they dont seem to have a clue what to do. They told me the engine must have been damaged when it was flooded but i dont think that is possible. Any other feedback is welcome. Ive only done 3200km and car only has 90,000km so seems strange to have to replace already.

 

Flood should not void the warranty, as the S1 is easily flooded...
I would suggest to bring it to other dealer, cuz' that one smells fishy to me...

 

Doesn't seem strange to me having to replace the engine already. I'm on my third...not sure how the engine warranty works overseas but in the US we have an 8yr/100k mile warranty on the engine core itself, that's how I got both of my replacements...

 

This coolant fix has been working for me.

 

How can Mazda sell these rotary engines if they are so easy to blow and dont last long?
Pay an arm and a leg for them to buy them and seems they arent so reliable? Is this the case or just some have issues with them for aggressive driving?

 

They aren't easy to blow up...everyone of them is a little different since they are hand built. Any number of reasons could be why it blew. It's a great engine it's just some are more temperamental than others. And from what I have seen on the street and track the harder you drive them the longer they last.
Problem with yours is you don't know how the last owner took care of it, they may have ruined the engine and got rid of it before it got too bad.

They are really sensitive compare to piston, plus right now Mazda is the only one that put it into production. Other manufactures give it up long time ago, includes benz. So it evolves much slower compare to piston engine when all the manufactures are digging into it.

 

Thanks all of you for your advise and ideas. Ive taken the car to another rotary specialist now and see what he finds. If its the engine looks like im in for a newbie. I think i need to learn more on the rotary engine and see how we can improve on a simple design.

 

It's been improved beyond improvement. What needs to be fixed is the cooling issues. That seems to be the biggest problem with the engine.

Also if the compression test from the dealership says the engine is shot then it's shot. Nothing to do now but to get a new installed.

 

Ok great news I got my RX8 back and engine is fine. The Mazda dealer had misdiagnosed the engine failure and after taking it a Rotary specialist he found the ECU had 100s of fault codes and they had incorrectly installed the CAT. This maybe a warning to others with incorrect diagnoses for engine failure. The car runs so well now and idle is smooth as silk. Im so happy i decided to take it to a fellow owner and mechanic RX7 owner to check out rather than take Mazda diagnoses as gospel. Again thanks all of you for all of your assistance. Installed cat wrong? Do explain

 

Yeah, that's kind of impossible short of forgetting bolts or forgetting to install the O2 sensor.

 

Not sure what was wrong other than the mechanic i took it to said he had to take the CAT out and refit it so not exactly sure what they did wrong. Runs well now and back to power on the pedal!

 

Glad you got it fixed, but still very, very curious how the installed the CAT wrong.
What could they have done?
Used a gasket that didn't have a big *** hole in it?
Used a wrong O2 sensor?
Didn't use an o2 sensor?.........but you would've gotten a CEL.
Put on a previously known clogged CAT?


Hundreds of fault codes?

 

What I was thinking was that the rear gasket was hung up on the catback when they bolted it down. That would cause an exhaust leak like a motha though and you would have noticed it being loud as hell.
