Loud clunk when shifting from park to drive

Hi, not sure what is causing this... but I when I shift from park to drive, the car makes a loud clunk... it only does this when I am parked on a hill though, otherwise on flat ground, it's fine. What's going on?

How many miles on it and what kind of maintenance has been done to it?

Is this only when you first get in your car and take off, or does it happen throughout your driving when you shift into drive (on a hill)?...If for whatever reason you put it into park, and then start driving again...lol

When you park on a hill, keep the brake on, shift into park and WITH YOUR FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKES apply the parking break. When you leave, put your foot on the break, release the parking break and WITH YOUR FOOT STILL ON THE BREAKS shift into drive.

Let me know how that works for you. Sorry for the caps, trying to emphasize the keeping your foot on the breaks part.

wasn't there a TSB that stated a loud clunk was normal under certain conditions, and it is the ABS test being performed....

It's got just over 40k miles on it.

Here's the situation...

I have underground parking, so when arrive at the top of the ramp/hill, I put on foot on the brake and shift the car to park.. I then put the window down and turn the garage key to open the garage door. I put my foot back on the brake and shift to drive (like you said tcole6, my foot never leaves the brake as I am shifting). And it makes that loud clunk each time.

It's between the shifts you need to keep constant breaking, not during the shift. Make one modification...when you go in park and before you take your foot off the brake to turn...put on the ebrake. Do your thing. When you're ready to go, foot on brake, ebrake off, shift and go.

I assume that when you turn to do the garage key thing, you notice your car roll a little bit to a stop, yes?

Ya, it does roll a bit to a stop.

Ok, I will have to try this out and use the ebrake. Thanks!
