Manic, did you resolve this yet? and were you perhaps in Carleon, Wales on Sept. 29? My wife an I were there to see the Ryder Cup and spotted a VR RX8 in the parking lot.

Sorry ZOOM-I-DO, completely missed your post. I haven't been to Wales in the Rex, I'm in the North East of England.

An update on the thread. Finally got booked into Hayward North rotary specialist and had them check the car over. What a change it makes to talk to a garage who are interested and actually know what they are talking about!

I showed Steve the list of what has been checked and changed on the car. He asked if I would drive around to recreate the sound while he listened from the passenger seat. He said although it does sound like pinging, if it was there would be about 2 or 3 clatters before engine death.

They carried out a hot compression test with the following results at 230 rpm:

Front 7.5, 7.6, 7.5 bar
Rear 7.8, 7.9, 7.8 bar

They commented that the front rotor would usually show higher compression than the rear, so it may at some time in its life have had a slight misfire but the figures were good.

He did find one of the rear tail pipes has cracked the weld where it exits the silencer, so he's welded it up to get me away for now. He also suggests the rear silencer may well be shagged as once it is hot it rattles when thumped, also the little giveaway that it was difficult to find something thick enough to weld to!

So I'm looking for an exhaust that isn't going to break the bank, probably a Toyosports.

thanks for the update. looking back at the pics i really dont see anything wrong with the catalyst- but there are two bricks in there so it could be the later one is an issue. I would bet though that the man at the service center is correct that its a sympathetic vibration causing the noise on some cracked heat shield/exhaust component

So this is happening to me every time I go on the freeway and my car gets hot. When I try to

accelerate you can hear the noise from the engine (like the sound in the 3d video) I'm not sure if

I should take it to the dealership or not? has anyone fixed or has this problem now?

I've changed the exhaust as recommended and mine still makes the noises I'm afraid. Rather stumped now.

Do you also get like bit of loss of power? because when I get on the freeway and I try to accelerate

it won't do it as fast it will just be very slow getting up to speed with the sound being very loud ha.

Well I think I'm going to take my car in to the dealership tomorrow and show them your video

that you posted because that's exactly what mine is doing. I'll let you know what happens!

Yep, it has less power when the noise appears.

Would love to know if your dealers can fix it.

Aright well I took my car to the dealer and now we wait to see what they say. I told the guy

Specifically what is happening and that It happens when you driving for awhile or on the

freeway. He told me it could mean I'll be getting a new engine, but hes not for sure yet.

In the next couple days I'll keep ya updated!

I've checked the SSV again today. I know it works ok as I've looked at this before, but there seems to be quite a lot of radial play on the shaft itself. Makes a bit of a rattle when moved around too.

Any ideas if this could be the cause?

I'm not even sure what it could cause it. I'm thinking something is loose some where in the engine

'or apex seals can be shot wore down. That is what I'm guessing what it could be, but I don't know

for sure my dealer still hasn't called ha so we'll see what it is.

So the dealership just called me and they said that I'm getting a new engine. I asked him what

was wrong with it and he just said you had low compression and I also have to replace the oil

injectors all four of them. There about 100$ a piece, which is not bad at all rather pay that then

2000$. Anyways if I were you I would go and get your engine compression check because it

might mean your engine is ready to go like mine.

Sounds like it would be a good idea the check the oil injectors

Cheers, will look into it.

The SSV and VDI valves on the intake aren't available to buy separately, so I've bought a brand new lower intake manifold. Picked it up for $99 on US Ebay, it's on its way over the pond to me now. Will see if it helps!

Have you had a compression test?

In reality, for the cost of a test (about £45 GBP) you can save a lot in diagnosing things.

I will ask for that tomorrow, plus while it's in the lift, will ask them to check on all heatshields.

ManicMechanic,

Have you resolved your issue yet? I've been following the threads, seems no definitive solution. Seems like you're just living with the noise right now?

I mentioned this in a similar thread...

Throw in a check/cleaning of the fuel injectors

Here's a little explanation of what's involved

How often should fuel injectors be cleaned?
Have you cleaned yours?
How much does it cost?
Can fuel additives that clean injectors be a cheaper alternative than removing them from the car to have them professionally cleaned?

I know my valves on the intake manifold are badly worn and chattering, so until my new manifold arrives and I get time to fit, I'm gritting my teeth and living with it. This is my latest atempt at a fix as all other avenues have led nowhere - including a day with a rotary specialist.

I have not cleaned mine yet because it seems to be running fine. It's on my to-do-list since I also want to check the oil injectors.

My understanding of the micro screens in the injectors is that they can not be cleaned by additives.

I've been trying to find a local place and the closest I found on the web is in Montreal!

I just picked up a can of BG44K, will try that in the gasoline tank to see if it helps at all.

It was making that noise as usual again after the car is warmed. I wonder if it's the ECU retarding the timings at WOT because the engine is running too hot?

In city today, outside was 20 C during rush hour. In stop and go traffic, I managed to hit 102 C and stays between 95C and 102 C.

Is this normal?

That seems really hot to me...
I managed to hit 100C after a two hour flat out run in 35C ambient.
In traffic I stay under 90 but I have MM tune

Did you check your fans?

Will the ECU retard timings if it senses things get too hot? And if/when that does happen, will it causes sounds like that above 4000rpm at WOT? Those noises I hear which are exactly like the video happen at full throttle only above those RPMs.
