Lack of power and rattling noise when accelerating above 5000rpm

Hi Everyone,

I've been lurking around here for a long time picking up all sorts of great information about my car. Let me start off by thanking all of you for sharing your knowledge and insight.

I'm having a problem with my '04 RX-8 6MT. What's happening is that I'm losing power when I accelerate past 5000rpm after driving for about 10 miles. The car runs perfectly fine up until that point. The power loss appears to be more severe in warmer weather, and it's almost non-existant in very cold conditions. "Very cold" being wintertime in Chicago ;-)

When the engine is acting up, it does not respond as quick as a rotary should and I hear a rattling noise from under the hood. I can temporarily "fix" the problem by running 2nd gear out to 9000rpm and then keep the tach above 5000.

The "fix" led me to believe that the problem was with one of the shutters on the intake system. I dug around a bit and the only thing I found that matched up with the RPM range was the VFAD actuator...the one in front of the air box. I managed to get at the vacuum line that controls it, and it _did_ move when I sucked on the line. I then moved up the line and disconnected the VFAD solenoid and drove it around for a few days to see if there was a difference.....and there wasn't. Damn!

I'm out of ideas and my dealership refuses to do any exploratory work due to what they call "Warranty Hunting". Can somebody please help me out?

This is exactly what the emissions recall is supposed to fix. Why won't the dealership work on it? Take it somewhere else.

I just recently dropped my car off at the dealer with a fistfull of recal notices and service bulletins. All they really did was re-flash the PCM and tell me "That should fix it".

Don't get me wrong, the guys at the dealship are very nice to me. They don't sugar-coat the issue when they talk to me, and they don't jerk me around. It's just that when they do warranty work, they don't get a check from Mazda if they can't find a problem, or if it takes them 20 man-hours when "the book" says it should have been fixed in two.

Thank god some one else thats having a problem like I'm having. Mine hesitates around 4 or 5k but if I jump on it a little it goes away and it doesn't matter if the car is hot or cold. Mazda said that it was a problem with the intake and the ways that the valves open and close and that they were working on it this has been a couple of months. I'm sorry to hear you have this problem to but I was stating to think that I was crazy.
