intermittent weird engine noise and rough idle

Hey guys, I've been searching for a solution on the forums for a few weeks now and havent really found anything too similar to my situation. I bought a 04 AT RX8,32K miles with a reman engine from 07 earlier this year and everything was fine for awhile, didnt have any real issues regarding start ups or rough idleing. About two months ago my car did stall on me at a stoplight but was able to start just fine. The weird thing is when i started driving it i would hear a griding type noise when the car would switch gears around the 4000 rpm range. this didnt happen all the time and was usually just in the lower gears. I figured i would replace the coils/wires/plugs to see if it fixed at least the stalling problem and they were due since they were still the originals. After replacement the car did seem to run better but i would still get intermittent rough idle when coming to a complete stop and when just sitting there and the grinding when switching gears hardly occurred. A friend of mine recommended to use some Techron fuel injector cleaner which actually did wonders for the car, the rough idle seemed to completely disappear and so did the "gear grinding".
Fast forward 2 months and the issues have returned, the car would randomly start to rough idle upon stoppage usually after a bit of stop and go driving and is more prominent with the AC running, also a bit of power loss occurs after trying to come out of a rough idleing stop. The grinding noise has returned but again only intermittently. I know that its not good to regularly use injector cleaner so im hesitant to add another bottle in since ive already done two treatments of tehcron. I take care of my car very well and i use nothing but the best gas and check the oil regularly with regular changes. Ive never had an issue starting the car and it runs great normally with no power loss whatsoever. Im kind of at a loss and have been searching for an answer for awhile so any help from you guys would be great, and sorry for such a long post.

If you done all that, try some easy MAF cleaner and clean your MAF sensor, pehaps clean the ESS sensor and even reset it.

Also check your gasoline. Be sure your running premium grade and see if there is any relationship between where you purchase fuel and when your having problems. Best way to do this is to run the tank almost dry, then fill up to full and run to almost empty again (so your not mixing fuel from multiple sources).

Ill definitely try out the MAF sensor and see if it fixes anything. Also I am using Premium grade and the issue has been occurring over a course of a few fill ups from different shells and chevrons so the gas seems to be ruled out. Thanks guys for the replies

I have the same problem, after about 20 minutes of highway the car makes a gear grinding noise at 4.5~5k rpm and stops when I go past or under that and the idle is very rough when I stop. Today I went ahead to clean the MAF sensor and found out that my collar tightening the air flow tube was loose, therefore causing a vacuum leak.

I'll be testing out the fixed leak and clean MAF later on this afternoon and will get back if that fixed it

So just to update this real quick, i was finally able to get some idemitsu premix and threw some into my tank on my next fill up and let me just say that my car has never run better. All the aforementioned problems have pretty much disappeared, no grinding, power loss or rough idle whatsoever. Its been 400 miles since ive started and everythings been great since then. Ill keep this updated if anything changes or if it happens to get worse.

That's really good to hear I have been having the same problem. I have changed two engines in the last year and now i am experiencing the same problem. So let me know if your situation changes. I'll have to try getting some premix over here in Trinidad.
