Intermittent DTC P0138 - Rear O2 Sensor Voltage High

Hi All,

In the last 3 months I've had the CEL come one, with the above code recorded, about 5 times. It stayed on for a few drive cycles, then went off. I understand from reading that this CEL is thrown if the voltage from the rear O2 sensor is too high for 2 mins, and the CEL goes off after a certain period of time without the condition happening again.

I cleared the code about 3 weeks ago using an OBD2 scanner, it hasn't come back. The car is going in for service next week, should I look at replacing the rear O2 sensor yet or wait for the light to come on steady? Do O2 sensors generally provide "warning" signs like this prior to giving up?

Car is a 2004 GT 6-speed, with 78K kms on it.

Thanks
Ash

well if its bad the light will come back on again, so i would start saving for a new one. i would wait to replace it until the CEL comes back on again, unless your mileage is really bad or there is some other symptom.

oh i misread that, if this is the 6th time its been on, you should change it...

Yea - thanks. I figured it's only a matter of time till it comes back on, RockAuto had a decent deal on the OEM NGK/NTK, so I just went ahead and ordered it.

Can't be too careful with the ignition/emissions stuff on these cars I guess....
