Interior of car smells like stagnant water.

Hi everyone. I have had so many problems with my rx8 lately, but this is certainly one of the most annoying.

Everytime I get in the car I noticed a funky smell, like stagnant water. It's almost like a spoiled milk smell.

The floor isn't wet at all and I haven't noticed any water leaking in.

My coolant level is fine and I haven't noticed any smell of antifreeze at all. I never use my A/C BTW.

So, I'm thinking it's the carpet so I had it steam cleaned the other day. No change.

I just pulled the entire interior carpet out thinking maybe it was in the pad or something, but no smell there either. I actually took it all out of the car and into my apartment and smelled it thoroughly, lol. No smell at all.

WTF could be the problem?? I'm really at a loss right now. BTW it always smells even when it hasn't rained for quite sometime. Any ideas friends???? I'll take the whole damned car apart if I have too, lol.

Oh, and BTW. I don't have any bad smell coming through the vents at all, so I doubt it's the Evap. In fact, the air that comes through the vents smells pretty good, especially when it's hot air.

^ LOL

Do you have kids in the car? Leather seats or cloth? Perhaps something spilled in the cushions.

Has it been like that since you got the car? If so, then I might suspect that something died or was dead in there. Not to be vulgar, but lets hope it wasn't a human body... If not then start sniffing around and pinpointing the location where the smell is coming from. If there aren't any moisture at all to be found inside, it could be a dead rodent. Though that goes against your said "stagnant water" smell.

^ What he said. Pull the cabin air filter and inspect. Creatures like to live up next to it.

Also read this: https://www.rx8club.com/trouble-shoo...otaled-233060/ perhaps water is running somewhere strange.

Do you smell it more when it rains? That car might have flooded. Did you remove all the carpet or just the floor? Also, a dead body doesn't smell like stagnant water, there is a BIG difference.
There is insulation on some parts of the car, did you ever take the center panel off and check there?

Check your duck-lips.

The drain for the a/c condensate is right at the apex of the firewall, over the transmission. A bitch to get at, but if the duck lip rubber sticks together you'll get build up inside.
