So I was driving home from work when suddenly my engine starts running rough and loosing power.

When I come to a stop I notice smoke rising from the hood.

**** I think something's seriously wrong, so I get it towed to Mazda and they tell me that 2 of the ignition coils are dead.

Is this normal? I just crossed 100,000 KM (about 60,000miles) do ignition coils suddenly fail at this age or is there some maintenance I should have been doing that could have prevented this?

Search. Yes it is normal. And what was the smoke from? That is not from ignition coils unless you had an electrical fire or something.

I actually just got mine out of the shop yesterday because one of my coils was burnt out and there was a second one that was about to go. I have an 09 R3 that has 38K miles on it, and I maintenance it religiously. Anyone care to pop in and say how often they've had to change theirs? I'm rather curious. From what I know, they usually go every 30K miles or so.

Had one set last me 5k miles. After that I upgraded. Stock coils are crap.

Is this something particular to stock coils on the RX-8? Coils failing is not a car problem I frequently hear about?
