i just hit a raccoon...

it knocked out my left fog light, took off part of the covering on the inside of the wheel well, as well as the flap underneath the fog light, and cracked the plastic that connects to the bumper and runs underneath the car.

i took it to a body shop, and he recommended getting a new bumper and other parts i need, which would be around $2200. he said if he just replaced the "splashes" it would be around $1000. i really don't want to spend that much money. anyone have some suggestions on what i can do?

Less, but similar damage when I hit an airborne length of tire retread that impacted from my right headlight to my left oil cooler. My total billed to my insurance company was $1,800, including the coil cooler, bumper, lip, repaint, splash pan, fog light, and fog light bracket. That was a few years ago, prices may be climbing on the parts.

Out of pocket cost was $0, as that was my deductible under comprehensive insurance.

Have you contacted your insurance company?

$2k comprehensive deductible?

My insurance company has a MAX comprehensive deductible of $300. I can't pick anything higher, and the drop down to $0 is peanuts of an increase Collision is capped at $1k max, though I have it at $300.

It's really not worth skimping on insurance premiums in the long run...

AFAIK the front bumper being cracked would mean they need to replace it. Mine was around 800 with labor and paint included. But I have $0 comprehensive and $100 collision so it wasn't a big deal. I'm not sure if they would let you claim it as comprehensive though, since it was an animal they will want to charge for collision.

no, hitting an animal is comp not collision. iirc its considered an ack of god if you will. like a tree falling on your car or hail

The policies can shift from company to company, but largely the ruleof thumb is that if it was avoidable as an immobile object, OR it is human driven with presumably some insurance, then it's collision. Anything that is unavoidable, either because it has a mind of it's own, the car isn't driving and acts of god occur, or it's in flight and thus unpredictable, then it's comprehensive.

I don't know of a single insurance company that would call an animal hit as "collision".

Sorry to hear about that. I had a similar incident with a deer(be glad the raccoon wasn't that big) and the insurance covered it and got me another 8. Good luck with the insurance work.
