how to check transmission vent?....

any advice would be appreciated

first, i could not find any threads on removing the rubber boot under the leather shift boot.... is there any trick to it? i dont want to tear it, does it pull up?

second, how can i clean the transmission vent? i am draining my gear oil and replacing with lubro moly 75-90w but before i do i want to check to make sure the vent is not plugged and i want to flush all the old oil out of the tranny.... is the vent easily accessable once i get the rubber boot off? can i just degrease it?

thanks

Yeah miker2005, I have a rancid 05 since the tranny service by the dealer 6K ago....it smells to high heaven. Just waiting for the leather boot to arrive but I have your exact question.

thats why i started these threads..... it is a common problem on the rx8, there were a few threads a few years back on it but nothing lately... same with mine, after service, smell was disgusting

do not waste your money on a leather boot alone.... chances are, you will need to clean thoroughly the top and bottom of the tranny... then you need to replace the rubber boots under the leather boot (assuming they are torn or saturated with gear oil)

also, you need to change out the stock tranny fluid with a cleaner, less sulfury one (like lubro moly or something fully synthetic)

also, i am looking into the vent on the topside of the tranny, i want to make sure it is clean and clear of old oil

once u refill the tranny, make sure they refill with exactly the spec amount of fluid, not more, which is probably 1.8l

assuming you do all these things, the smell in the cabin will be minimal..... having said all of that, i am still at a loss why in heck a smell under our vehicles is somehow being vaccuum'ed into the cabin when we travel with windowns down.....

let me know if you need more info

Very bad idea.

Stock, Redline MT-90, or perhaps Eneos (if you don't mind spending $180 for two quarts).

Search is your friend. Impatience is your enemy. Just because it's old doesn't always make it out of date. The car's the basically same as it was 10 years ago.
