Help please

hey people. I am hearing a noise from about midway into my car. I swear to god it sounds like a belt is going but the noise is not coming from the engine. has anyone else experienced this problem or have any ideas. Like i said it comes from about the middle of the car and its a squealing noise. Also it doesn't happen all the time and only when i am stopped, while in drive....say at a red light. When i put the car in neutral the noise stops. My car is an 04 auto with close to 71k miles on it.

Well lets start with some basic info:

IS it the original Fluid.
Miles on ATF fluid?

If it is the original fluid, change it.

I would guess that it is the original fluid since i have not had it changed. but i bought it used with 60k miles on it. Would that be causing the noise underneath my car though?....just sounds more like an engine noise would occur...but this is my first rotary engine so i could in all likely hood be wrong...

I would change the ATF since i doubt it has been changed. If you could get a sound clip of the noise that would help a lot. Do you think it could be vibration or is it a squeal. If its vibration then its your motor mounts. Does the car have any power loss?

yes i has had lose of power. i brought it to mazda and got that recall done on it but it didnt fix my problem. I thought it might be the cat and brought it to a non-mazda exhaust shop and they said it was fine.....but then i read in one of these forums that it has to be checked at a certain rpm and i dont remember hearing the guy rev my car at all....i also have a rattling noise when i hit like 5-6k rpms in 1st and 2nd gear sometimes....seems to happen more often in nice weather. like 70+ degrees. the rattling noise is like a tin can of marbles...i dont use anything but 91 grade gas, since that is the highest we have out here...i want to see whats wrong but the closest mazda dealer is 200 miles away :(...so if its something i dont gotta travel for then all the beter. but if need be then i will make the trip

Still sounds like a CAT. Need to remove pipe and look inside.
Prts open up in that range.
you could try removing air bubles in the cooling system.

i am just going to take it in to a mazda dealer....have them look at everything and order in a new cat if they need to since i am still covered by warranty.

^careful with dealerships - i've been lurking around and noticing a lot of people are getting jipped - getting something changed or repaired that have nothing to do with what's really wrong.

Like razz stated, a 'marbles in a can' sound at a certain rpm and a slight whistle could be a CAT issue. I currently have the same sound going on now because i hit something while going up a driveway. Do you have a CEL(check engine light)? Are there any local members that could possibly help?

Razz1 04-22-2009 09:50 PM

Aah... that would be an exhaust leak Atilla

Atilla 04-22-2009 09:52 PM

^yeah, i have that too :(

dozer 04-22-2009 09:53 PM

my check engine light does come on.....i ran it and it gave me the code P0456 for a small emissions leak

^ is a bot?? but never mind that I have the same problem too!! I have a 2004 Auto with 52k on it and when the car hit around 51k i noticed that in the garage that my car made a squealing noise in only D or R not in N. Also from 1k to 3k when i hit the peddle i hear a sort of rumbling noise like the exhaust is shaking or something. I don't rember if i got a loss of power tho.. i mean i have noticed that my 0 to ~15 MPH is really sluggish, my families 09 corrola is faster then the rx8:Eyecrazy: i can get a record of the noise if anyone wants. *Disclaimer I have spelled many words wrong.. i dont care**

edit: the car takes like 3 to 4 cranks to start:icon_no2: it was like 2 when i got it but its been getting harder.. even when its warmed up and hot.

rotary369 04-28-2009 02:07 PM

anyone got any idea?? i kind of think its my cat.. because today when i cleaned it (by clean i mean rubbing the bottom near the little square, and taking the dirt off)... i think when near December i ran over a deer.. a dead one on the road i might have banged it up. but when i clean it, it goods WOOt nice and fast starting up and once i drive it for a bit it gets shitty again and it feels/sounds like the exhaust it shacking or burbling.. got any idea??
