HELP! Lights and ACC on but Car will not even crank!

Was driving home and came to a stop light. Car came to an idle & then stalled. I tried to start it back up but it didn't even budge, nudge or crank. Nothing, but strangely all my lights, radio, and electronics work. So not battery.

Is my alternator shot? What else could be the culprit?

Need help ASAP!

I should also add that this happened a day after I installed the BHR ignition. Oh and already checked my coil & plug connections & ground wire, all of that is fine.

Jon316G 03-26-2009 12:24 AM

Should have nothing to do with the alternator.
Sounds like something that would occur when the starter interlock switch isn't engaged.
Where did you run your ground?

Derex'8 03-26-2009 12:29 AM

It's bolted down along with battery tray(which is aluminum), which is bolted to chasis.

Should the Ground terminal be in direct contact with the chasis or does it matter? As it is now it's bolted down on the battery bracket.

To dark right now but will check in the morning all my fuses. Damn this shit sucks had to get AAA to tow me the rest the way home. Might I add this happened to me 1030 @ night and was stranded in not the most friedliest parts of town.

Check the fuse box under the hood. Most importantly check the ENGINE fuse, that was my problem when I did the LS2 coil swap.

Brettus 03-26-2009 12:56 AM

also - check the switch on the clutch pedal .

Derex'8 03-26-2009 12:59 AM

^^^Huh? switch on clutch pedal?

Brettus 03-26-2009 01:00 AM

yes - the one that won't let you start the car unless the clutch pedal is down ....

Razz1 03-26-2009 01:03 AM

Aluminum is not that good of a conductor. Rewire to chassis

Derex'8 03-26-2009 01:09 AM

Wow!!!! thats embarrasing owned car going on 3 yrs now and knew nothing about that switch tisk:tisk:tisk

Well thanks for all the suggestions fellas, will run by all these in the morning and go from there. Been one hell of a day and just need to rest my mind & body now.

Please feel free to keep all suggestions coming...

Yup... that is the starter interlock switch:

Agree.
I used a chassis ground to the right of the master brake cylinder:

I used the chassis ground under where the stock air box would be.

if you get a loud click when you turn the key but motor does not turn over it could be your stater motor

Derex'8 03-26-2009 01:25 AM

Oh snap thanks for the picture, will have to check that out. Was thining of something else

Oh and no click @ all when key is turned.

No problem.
And there are two ways to check the starter interlock switch:
  1. Simply press in that white shaft to engage the switch and try starting the car.
Obviously, you don't need to press the clutch pedal in.
  2. If you suspect the switch itself to be faulty, disconnect the wire harness and take a single wire and jump the two terminals.

If the car still doesn't start, then its definitely something else.

Vyndictive 03-26-2009 08:19 AM

This sounds pretty silly, but worth adding... if you jump the terminals, make sure the car isn't in gear when you try to start the car if you don't have the clutch depressed.

oops!

Derex'8 03-26-2009 12:43 PM

Well it was indeed the 15A engine fuse in the eng bay. But now my problem is the fuse keeps blowing. What gives? Is there a short a somewhere thats causing this fuse to keep blowing out?

Where could this short be?

Brettus 03-26-2009 12:45 PM

First place i would be looking is the coil install ....... double check everything

also :do you have an aftermarket midpipe ? If so , check the o2 sensor wire is not shorting out - this happened to me once ......

I8U 03-26-2009 12:47 PM

Re-check your connections since you just did the coil upgrade. Fix that ground also.

Derex'8 03-26-2009 12:48 PM

I regrounded the coils wire to the chasis. I guess I need to go back over and recheck all coil & wire connections

I8U 03-26-2009 12:57 PM

Well, if the ground isn't the issue just throw in a 20amp fuse! HAHA, I keed I keed. No don't do that, I'm not real sure what all components draw power through that fuse. Did you check all the fuses in the engine bay and the interior fuse bank? I found a couple that were blown from the coil swap.

Derex'8 03-26-2009 01:02 PM

Ok fellas replaced fuse again, retorqued my battery terminals and coil ground down(which were a tad loose), pushed in and secured all coil & plug wires. Fired her up & everything seems fine thus far, will keep an eye on it though.

Thanks a ton for everything, Damn I love this forum. Saved me some major time & headache. Can't imagine how something so small disabled my whole damn vehicle. haha

Yeah I looked over all the other fuses in the bay & they all checked out fine. Will give the interior fuses a look over though!

HAHA you know what I was seriously considering replacing that fuse w/a 20A

Derex'8 03-28-2009 07:28 PM

Well the problem has returned...

Does anyone know what is ran by the 15A engine fuse?

I have much reason to believe there is a issue with the coils. I will reinsatalling my stock ones tomorrow and seeing if this will be duplicated. I'm going to also run a check on them with a multimeter, before uninstalling.

I'm also getting a flashing security light whenever this happens. (which according to the shop manual could be a com error between coils)
