Help with CEL Codes!

Alright fellas. Hoping to get some help. - I got a CEL last night, car runs great. These are the codes that were read.

aaCatalyst efficiency monitor malfunction - bank 1. Probable cause:

aa1 - exhaust leak
aa2 - Check other service codes first
aa3 - faulty catalytic converter.

BTW: 2005 RX8 GT, 66k miles on it. Runs like a dream. A good dream that is. Averages 20 mpg.

wcs, that looks like he is just copying text results.

iMoto (any connection to the race team?), that code usually only throws when your cat has failed or you have installed a midpipe. It means the ECU is seeing that the cat isn't filtering down the emissions properly.

If you have a cat on, and you are in the US and within the 8yr 80,000 mile federal warranty, go get the cat replaced at a dealer.

My money is on the cat too, since it is still running great despite the code.

Thank you for your reply! Car is bone stock and yes I'm in the US. So the cat should fall within warranty?

So what would it look like if he copied and pasted smoke signals .. still useless, no?
These aren't the droids we are looking for.

Yes, according to the mileage and year you posted, you should still be within the federal warranty.

Agreed. I just ignored the rest and focused on the text of the CEL, which does indeed match one of our CELs. I assumed the rest of the "aa" prefixed items were just search results that he pasted in, and whatever pasting method he used interpreted the leading bullet points as "aa".

No, the sensor failing gives other errors, with a few being possible. My 8 is throwing the code for the rear O2 sensor "heater circuit voltage too low", i.e., it's cooked from my MM tune exhaust heat when I had the BHR midpipe on for ~40,000 miles. I'm ignoring it, because that tune and pipe are about to go back on, and it would just cook yet another sensor.

Only available on the Android

Yes, I'd love to see someone copy and paste smoke signals. Especially since I don't know how to speak 'smoke puff'.

Thanks again everyone! Have called my local Mazda stealer to schedule an appointment. Going to have a compression test done as well.

I'm honestly interested in the tool you used to read the codes.

While RIWWP tried to validate with the information you provided ...
If you have used an ODBI or other incapable diagnosis machine you may have the wrong codes?

The codes were read by a code reader at Auto Zone.

Hope this helps.

Yup. Same with Advance (though they aren't really out west), most Pep Boys, and likely NAPA / Reilly's as well, though I have no experience with those two.
