handbrake inside (tab) cover cracked!
Hi
The black bottom cover around the handbrake - the one that hides the mechanics of the handbrake cracked. Now i can see what's under the handbrake (i can see the color of the car, some metal gears, etc).... I don't know how it cracked - but should this be covered by warranty - it seems to be really flimsy if it cracked on its own?
thanks

Did it crack or did the plastic tab that covers that gap break off? See this post: https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...1&postcount=32
Ironic - we were just talking about those pieces breaking off in the cold weather a few days ago.
Mine gets stiff enough that it holds the handbrake up slightly, just enough to keep the light on, when I start off in the mornings.
My first solution was to lean on it, force it down and thump on it a bit. Now that I know that piece of platic can break off and that it gets flexible enough to let the handbreak down once the interior warms up slightly I just ignore the light for a few minutes each morning.
Mazda really should have used a better plastic, but you can't expect them to think of *everything*. I think it should be covered by warranty. I'd call the dealer and ask them to order the part ahead of your visit to save time.

Fairly common problem, it's replaced under warranty. A number of the folks that get together regularly in MN have had the problem. (I've had mine replaced once.. no signs of cracking since then.)

hi Post #2, that is exactly what happened!!!!
yes the tab broke off i don't even know how i just noticed one day it was broken.
The dealer said its not covered under warranty, and it will cost 200$ (CAD) to replace it
Any help/suggestions? This should be covered IMO

All of the folks I know of (including myself), simply went into the dealer and said "The boot on the e-brake is cracked/missing." Quick response was "ok, we'll order the part and call you when it's in."
Which is exactly what they did, no cost. (FYI, the boot is part of the e-brake assembly so they have to replace the WHOLE thing, not just the boot.)

damn... the dealer i go to is usually good about stuff (they were only ones to replace brakes because of squealing)... i guess i have to call around other dealers.

If you really like them, go back and talk to them about it. Try to talk to a different person. Say that other dealerships are repairing it under warranty, and see if you can talk them into it.

Had mine replaced under warranty last summer but it broke again on the first day of sub 32 degree weather. So mine has broken twice during normal use. I'm going in for an oil change and will mention it, but apparently the replacement won't solve the problem.
