Gutless?!?!?

Hey - Just started driving an 8 I bought without motor or tranny and just got done installing a used motor and tranny. Its an auto with k&n and a cat delete pipe. This thing is gutless off the line up until maybe 3g - is this normal? Also at times around 5.5k and higher I get a creaking noise times - not sure if its like a rattle, chasis related - had some power plant frame issues, or if I didnt know better I'd say it almost sounds like predetonation (not sure what spark knock sounds like on these though). If its helpful I'm getting code P0336. Any info or insight much appreciated. Creaking bordering on chirping is a good description.

I don't know about gutless, there's certainly not a lot going on before 4-5k.... you gotta wind it up. That said, what's your 0-60 like?

P0336 is the eccentric shaft sensor, reset the computer and see if it comes back AND check the battery ground connection to the frame at the front of the engine bay. Try replacing the sensor after that.

it's difficult to comment on what is normal without knowing what the basis of comparison is. my 8 seems "gutless" off the line compared to my vette, but feels quite spunky compared to my my friends 4cyl Camry.
do you know how many miles the used engine has?

What does the terminal ground have to do with p0336 code? Sense it was a theft recover that ground wire was cut and I had to splice - could be my splice isnt holding?

Havent timed my 0-60. Its really flat first 20mph. Its like another post I just found stating that this is semi normal for autos. At first you get the feeling you could pedal bike faster. Its like there is no launch snap at all. I was told the motor had 30k on it.

I may test drive another locally if possible for comparision.

Reseting the comp doesnt loose any ecu flashes right?

Are we suppose to run premium in these? Could regular fuel, no cat and a k&n cause predet?

Do the gear labels (p, r, n, d) on the shifter light? I'm guessing so - must have forgotten a plug or something.

Yes, they take premium.. says so on the gas fill cover also.
Resetting the ecu doesn't loose any flashes. There's a sticky thread in the tech section about doing resetting both types of memory if you want a real clean reset.
The battery ground needs to be perfect for the sensor signal to be at the right level, this is the first thing to check for a P0336 according to a Mazda TSB. BTW www.finishlineperformance.com for all TSBs and recalls.

Whats this stand for?

Thanks for the contribution!!

If it stands for read the manual - I do not have one - I also dont remember seeing it on my cap. It was a subquestion I figured I'd throw in along with thoughts of predet. How about answering the question on whether preted could occure under the listed circumstances?!?!?

0-60 time @ 12 seconds. Whats the typical 0-60 for an auto? Seems like it stands still from 0-3 rpm.

You know that Mazda has made your specific owner's manual available on MazdaUSA.com for free?

12 sec 0-60 is pretty bad. Would my engine light being on with a p0031 code be helping make this slow number by running in a safe mode? It couldnt be a result of not having a cat could it be?

Dude with your post count you seem to be new to the forums.
It isn't polite to cross post for the same problems.

Your other thread is almost identical.
It really makes it hard to help you out, you should consider closing one or merging them together.

Maybe you should try replacing the front O2 sensor

Hopefully this makes a difference!

^^^^ lol oh it will make a difference alright

At least it was a cheap and easy fix.

The automatics don't have that much off the line power especially the early model 4ports, so don't expect a rocket propelled 3.23 quarter mile

Yea I'm starting to finally get a little relief here - worrying about whether I got a bad used motor or not sucks!

No engine lights - it seems to pull harder and smoother now. I havent heard what I think was predet either. Was that bad to be running it for like 150mi without the o2 hooked up? I guess I was thinking of it like the same as if someones went bad - it prolly safe modes and cant be too harmful.

I have a high flow magnaflow rolled met subtrate cat coming today that I'm goign to install now. I'm guessing that will help with the intial 2k dead spot.

I havent installed the cat yet but I tested it again 0-60 and at best I'm getting 11 sec times. I found a couple posts with similar times that stated something had to be wrong and the dealer themselves told me that seemed way too slow. So compression test and if it is bad the guy who sold will hopefully properly refund me....

So I had the cat installed yesterday. Could'nt check compression right away as my dealer doesnt have their machine functioning?!?! I could notice a difference straight away. Rpms stay up longer. A little more grunt down low. Anyway retimed a bunch of 0-60s with my best at 8.5 and my average prolly around 10. Still dogmatic at times though. Prolly should have gone for a regular cat instead of highflow. Tranny had delay shift from 1st to 2nd several times during redline which was annoying and it has been shifting sort of hard from 1st to 2nd on the regular. Almost makes me think that some of this is because of tranny issues instead. Anyway nice to see a semi respectable time. I also test drove a different one yesterday and it too was dogmatic in the low rpms seemly crawling through the low rpms.

Had the compression checked and one is normal and one is high due to carbon build up. Also was informed there is a crankshaft learning process that needs to be done when engine is swapped. After changing plugs and crankshaft learning it seems to have less of a dead spot. For future readers note that these autos really are dogs. There is sort of a normal lag from 0-3k rpms and depending on whether the engine is tuned up 0-60s can range from like 8-12 seconds easily. Seemingly plugs and loose wires can make a huge difference.

Just curious, but are you running the 4 or 6 port automatic? (4 or 6 gears?)
