Exclamation Gas mileage - HELP

When im driving and not on the gas, and still in gear there is alot of drag. To coast I will just pop it in neutral, and when i need to speed up again, Ill get back in gear. My 8 is an 04, manual. Does anyone else experience this, i have driven many manual cars and none of them have done this?!?

(in gear when i let off the gas, there is alot of drag almost like im downshifting or breaking, i can not coast in gear, or i will quickly slow down. Doesnt matter which gear im in)

Check your brakes are not dragging which will seem like you a gently applying the brake constantly. Don't coast in neutral it is dangerous (you cannot use power to get out of trouble) and consumes more fuel.

This thread should be in "Troubleshooting". You mention gas mileage in the title, yet don't tell us what it is. Is there any difference between clutch-in coast vs in-neutral? In-gear coastdown will depend a lot on the rpm. If you're around Lansing and want some help troubleshooting, pm me.

You're trying to make it sound as if you have a severe problem but you start to lose speed if you don't hit the accelerator pedal... common sense. Don't try to save gas and start coasting in neutral, you actually waste more gas with an 8.

The gas is shut off when coasting in gear and it's using gas when at idle in neutral.

I thought it was:

AFR's are high (18-22) when decelerating &

AFR's are around Stoich (14.7) or a teeny bit higher when at at idle.

But yes, more gas is used at idle.

As pointed out by Hiflite999, this thread is totally in the wrong section. Can someone please move it? GENERAL AUTOMOTIVE is for everything NOT related to RX-8s.

Paul.

Moved to Troubleshooting.

Are you sure you have a real problem? It sounds like you are used to driving automatic transmission cars and this is your first manual. Auto's do coast more during deceleration because you don't have a direct connection to the engine.
