frayed belt...

I was checking the oil in my car and noticed the drive belt, the one for the crank, alternator and water pump, was frayed somewhat.

I only saw it because it was wrapping atop the alternator pulley. I installed SR motorsports pulleys a few months ago and the belts were fine then.

Did the pulleys cause the fraying? Has anybody had this happen before?

Obviously, I should replace the belt before it fails and leaves me stranded, or does anybody think I could get the local Mazda dealer to replace it under warranty?

Thanks.

Belts fray and hop, it happens. It's part-o-life thus not covered under your warranty UNLESS your one of the pullies is defective. This type of thing happens with all cars. You need to examine the belt more closely and see how sever the fraying is, if it at all seems that at some point the belt is splitting then YES you should be concerned. Sometimes belts just hop off of pulleys once they get too frayed from not being taught.

Bottom line, go get it checked out. Look at the pullies as well as the belt. Sometimes pullies do weird things, like break....why...i gots no ****** clue

Maybe its wolverine, he wants his 8 back so doing all kinds of weird things to your X winged 8... lol....yeah get your belt checked. I always keep a spare of them in my trunk, cause once in another car my belt tore in the middle of a village in northern Bangladesh....(it was a land rover) and the locals made me a nice rope to tie up the fan belt and amazingly it worked till i got home (400km). I don think i can do that with the 8 , nor do I think even the parts shop in my city has 8 belts in stock . lol...so my trunk has extra spark plugs, extra coils, two belts and a litre of Mobil 1. So arent you glad you guys live on the right part of the world....!!!!!
