first oil change

i was planning on getting my first oil change at 3K miles, but i don't drive very long distances. i've had my car 3 months and i'm not even to 1600 miles. if i wait til 3K, it will be like 6 months. i've read some people get an oil change almost immediately after getting their car. it can't hurt that i get my oil changed early right? any recommendations?

With a lot of short trips you sholud change oil based on time rather than distance.

It will only hurt your wallet, but do it anyway. With the seals wearing in, there is usually a bit of fuel getting past them into the oil, so it's a good idea to change it before 3K anyway.

i've been adding oil a lot. apparently it's supposed to do that when it's fairly new. so if you do the math, i've gone through enough oil to completely change the oil. is that comparable to a regular oil change?

new oil mixes with the old. its a good idea to drain the old out and put new in.

How much oil and what mileage? If you are adding more than about a quart in 3,000 miles you may have a problem. Regardless of the amount you are adding, you should still change the oil regularly.

we don't have long term information regarding the effects of synthetic oil in the renesis.

Short answer: Because Mazda says so

Long answer: Mazda says they have not tested the engine and seals over an extended period of time with synthetics and therefore, they only recommend using the 5w20 that's stated in your manual. Now, if you read through the various threads on this board, you'll find some using sythetic, or a blend, or others doing what Mazda says. The safest bet is to go with a high quality oil (one you can find at most places would be Castrol GTX).

Hope that helps some.

I did my first oil change at 1,000 miles because of all the gunk that can get in there on a new car.

Definitely make sure to get the oil changed regularly....your car will thank you in the long run.

Having mine changed on friday: about 1000 miles too. I plan on following every 3k for oil and every 6k for tire rotation. Curious if one can actually get under this car to change the oil without a lift. I could dsee changing it myself most of the time.

Some claim they can do it without lifing up the car. With a jack anyone can do it. See the DIY on oil changes.

i'm at 1600 and i've already added 1.5 qts. according to this thread(https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/didnt-expect-much-oil-consumption-83603/), my oil consumption is normal. still in the break in period, and i drive short distances. sound normal?

it has been 3 months already, and i need to get my bumper replaced, so i might as well do my first oil change then too. can't hurt, right?

Have it changed, especially if this is the first oil change.
