I've read the many threads on engine issues, namely the huge Vegas thread and did a search, but couldn't find a definitive answer whether the metallic ping is, or if it = badness, or if there are variations of the ping.

I write this, cause my car is running good, but I have a short ping. I've noticed many with busted engines have also mentioned the ping- but some haven't. Do all those with busted engines have the ping?

My car has 13.5 K. I live in DC. Its been over 100 a few times. I have no loss of power. Change 5w20 every 3000 miles and add oil every 1500 or so. Warm up the car for 10 minutes before hitting redline about 2-3 times per day. My commute is all city though, so I do get a fair share of stop and go traffic.

I'd describe my ping coming between 5-6K only in first and second though. Its very brief, as soon as I hit 7, it goes away and I have no power loss.
I'd describe it as like if you put a button in an empty coffee can and shook it.

a few weeks ago when it was hot, the car had 2 series of ver very fast rough idles. No stalling. Hasnt happened since, but it never happened before, and it was hot out. My car has never stalled or flooded. Never any power loss. But I do get a brief ping, and live in a pretty hot climate with a city commute.

my car runs fine though, no power loss, nothing.

my question is, first, is this sound like the same ping as those with busted engines. Secondly, aside from sharing this with a tech, is there anything else that I should do/concern me?

 

probably require a fellow rx8 owner to ride with you and compare notes?

 

are you very certain it is not SDAIS operation?

 

that's what i'm suspecting too, hence my offer to ride along to hear for any 'weird sounds' :D

 

Im actually not, could you elaborate a bit more on the SDAIS? If there's other threads on it, i apologize. I've seen bits and pieces on it, but want to make sure my car's actions aren't abnormal given the heat and other threads. I wouldn't say the ping is that loud, but there is a certain noise in those rpm ranges, everything else about my car is normal, but just make sure.

 

I'm hoping it is SDAIS given that everything else about the car appears 'normal'.
I'll try a search, but if you have quick explainations on it I'll take it...I have seen SDAIS pop up in the BAD news vegas thread, but it never officially gets explained against the pinging noise so to speak

I am hoping and given further reading of the above thread that its normal.
Just wondering what the PING sounds like to make sure I know it when I hear it and its similarities to SDAIS in sound- ...it would really suck if the pinging sounded like SDAIS as pinging seems to be a precusor to the engine issues and itd be hard to tell

 

if you had ping/knock/pre-detonation the car's knock sensor would tell the pcm and the pcm would retard timing and you would feel a loss of power associated with it.

 

ping is something you do to test communications between 2 computers on a network. :D
