engine vibration at high rpms

I have a 05 rx8, with 52000km and is well maintained but in the last 2 months @ high rpms (4500+) it makes a strange vibrating noise coming from the drivers side of the engine! I have checked for ovbious things and have cleaned and tightened the K&N filter, as it does come from that direction.
Please help, as I don't want to hand it to a shop with no idea, as we all know it will cost $$$.

Thanks...

TB is ThrottleBody...

If your engine is physically shaking I would guess that your motor mount went bad which is pretty common on the 8. You should be able to physically inspect it though and find out.

TB = throttle body...
Please list your modifications
Anything done in the last two or three months?
Can you post a video or sound clip of the noise?
How do you know the noise is coming from the driver's side? @ 4500 rpm?

I'm guessing that you'll get at least a dozen clueless guesses .... and there are no dumb Qs just dumb TB guesses

This is where the dumb TB guess coming from, if it's the motor mount, then won't be just the driver side, and it would be really rough idle....

Why? Because the TB is on the drivers side? Could the airbox be open? How about a loose lugnut? Could the wheel be out of balance? How about a wrench chillin in the engine bay? Since he is at speed when it occurs, what if it sounds like it is on the drivers side only because that is where he is sitting? TeamRX8 is right...there are millions of reasons why a "vibrating noise" can come from the engine bay? Without further troubleshooting you can't do anything but guess.

And if you reread my statement...I said if the engine is physically vibrating and causing the noise...it would be a motor mount in which there is one on the drivers side and on the passenger side.

I've found that problems can be classified into two main categories.

1) Owner induced problems from mods or other well intentioned changes to the car
- These can often be identified through temporal correlation

2) Mazda related "common issues" related to model year, mileage, climate etc.

Hence my questions above.

I concur

With OP cleaned and tightened the K&N filter and it only happened at high RPM on driver side, that's why it leads me to guessing TB.
Not sure why TeamRX8 would think it's dumb when everyone is pretty much guess other people's issues on the forum when we are not able to physical diagnose it.

chelsea- what do you mean by "checked the obvious" and did you check the obvious with you listening with the hood open while the car was reveved by someone else?

dukes- when was the last time the car had a tune up? you'll want to check or have checked the motor mounts.

Uhhh...what part of the TB can cause a vibration noise? Hell...what does a vibration noise sound like? I've seen vibration...I've felt vibration...I've heard ticking, rattling, etc...but never vibration

The only mod is a k&n filter.
I have checked and the filter is nice and tight and very clean!
The strange throaty-vibration noise only happens when the car is in gear!
If I was to rev the car in N, it sounds fine.
I would love to post the noise on here for you but i'm away for 2 weeks...

Thanks again...

I feel that my right side engine mount is bad. For a while i thought maybe my bearings were going bad, but today i decided to drive my car with out the AC. I drove for a good 15 miles with some stops. Notice that I never heard my rattles, but as soon as i put load on to the einge (Ac) it started to rattle in neutral. So I took it to a empty lot and did some hard turns to left, and notice the a clank noise with the engine hesitating. I tried that 3rd gear symptom , but never can reenact.

I forgot to mention, my engine doesnt make noise at high rpm like TC. I was reading the PDF on bad mounts, i notice you have the hoist the engine
Also my 8 is a 04 with 86k miles.

a floor jack under the engine is all you need. you don't have to cheery picker it, just jack it high enough to slide old out and new in.
