Code red...damsel in distress!!! :(
All,
First off just want to let you all know that i drive a 2005 AT with roughtly 82K miles. I have had problems with my 8 for a while now, i have made posts and everything and appreciate everyones imput. I dropped off my car at a Mazda dealership on tuesday because my car has loss of power and also it was making a clicking sound and when my car was at a stoplight or stopped at a drive through for my dunkin d's coffee in the morning my car was vibrating. Dealership still has is and can not tell me wtf is wrong with it. This is what I have tried so far: around 50K - did a transmission fluid flush around 65K - put in brand new coils around 72K - put in brand new spark plugs {replaced all of them due to flooding My car has been giving me problems around 25K and because they diagnosed it with a TCL (torque converter lockup) they said that there was no fix for this shit. THey put something in it forgot the name of it but it reduced the problem and does not eliminate it. I cant trade my car in becuase i still owe money on it, i paid 27K for my car back in 2006 when i purchased it and the interests rates are f'n ridiculous!!! Anywho.... this dealership told me that they found 1 spark plug cracked, told them i replaced these effers last winter when my car flooded and he changed that spark plug. Used a tool to test the compression and its still not working properly and they told me that they sprayed some chemical in my car as well and nothing. They are still trying to figure it out and i am getting veryyyyyyyyyyyy pisssssssssssssed offfffffffff and trust me you do not want to make a portuguese woman mad!!! Lol for real tho!!! I have read thread about CAT issues, my question is that does anyone think that this may be a CAT issue or an engine issue? Any advice pleaseeeeeeeeee so that i can tell these idiots how to fix my car. Thanks in advance! |
sounds like you had a bad spark plug

I would say because the problem as been experienced from 25k miles and on, they should replace your transmission. You were covered by SSP 67 when the issue started and they have not corrected the issue properly. Call MNAO, reference the dealer you are working with and bitch, bitch, bitch. Mention SSP 67 and ask why it wasnt replaced under that SSP. Good Luck.
SSP 67 is a 5yr/60k mile power train warranty. It covers your transmission and engine from defects. I will see what they dealer tells me today, should be before 5pm my time ET. If all fails i will call up Mazda and mention the SSP 67 cuz i didnt know about it then. This f'n blowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwws!!!! |
PS = Thank you for mentioning that to me jmc23200

ask them for the numbers from the compression test and post them up here .
Need rpm and 6 numbers . one for each combustion chamber .... |
Haha. Well, unfortunately, sometimes you have to. SSP 67 would cover the replacement of the transmission and torque converter. As long as this problem has been well documented in the past while you were covered under warranty, you should be able to get it replaced for free. You may need to threaten to or even actually lawyer up.
Here you go. SSP 67: http://forum.rx8nl.com/mwf/attach/97/6997/ad-18.pdf Scroll down to see what is covered under the Transmission and Trans axle section. Now you have something to fight with. Print this out and hand it to the dealer and see what they say. If you problem dates back to when you were covered under the warranty and it is in there system, you have a new tranny/torque converter |
:sooooooooo pissssssssssssed offfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff :banghead
That dealership just called me back saying that they dont have the shit to fix my car, now i have to call up another dealership and find a way to have someone follow me to this dealership so i can drive this car to another one..... i f'n hate having tits!!! That sucks .
Although it doesn't sound like they are taking advantage of you . That would be when they charge you $$$$ for heaps of stuff that didn't need doing . Best of luck at the new dealership . |

Kim!
I'd seriously suggest picking Liberty Mazda ((877) 278-0163) for that (unfortunately) 3rd dealer. It's a bit far, but entirely worth it. Seriously. I just had my cat replaced by them without a single hassle or trouble point, even with driving my 8 up there with an 'illegal' midpipe on it for the cat replacement. No issues at all. Talk to Tom (AND ONLY TOM!!!!!!) about it, and he will get it figured out and all settled. They have 2 very experienced techs that really know their stuff about our 8s. But only talk to Tom. I can't stress that enough. Talk to someone else and you could be tossed through the washer again. If you can't speak to Tom because he is unavailable, then call back later to try again. Feel free to drop my name and Marc's name to Tom. He knows Marc VERY well, and remembers me right off the bat now. |
Dude this thread is awesome!!!!

Made my day, I wish I was in Florida. I would like to shake your hand. Code Red is right. This girl needs help, someone local help a sister out. |
I don't think she needs help, just another dealer. Like stated above, go to Liberty Mazda and talk to Tom. I would also try to get ALL of your cars history printed IE all of your visits regarding the same problem since 25k miles. That way you will have proof of when it started and the document that covers it SSP 67. You should be fine. I live in Boston if you do need some help. Massachusetts Consumer Laws protect you against this. If a part that is under warranty fails or has problems and you bring it to the manufacturers attention and they do not fix it, even after you're warranty expires they are reliable for it.
|
I meant someone needs to go with her to a dealership, she obviously isn't having any luck by herself. I would go with you but I'm in Vegas!

Let me see if my wife will be around tomorrow to deal with the gas company tech that is coming to our house ("sometime" between 8am and 8pm "appointment"). I can meet you at the Fairhaven dealer and tail you up to Liberty.
My guess is that you have a clogged cat. Gut feeling, not much I can base it on at the moment. It could be compression, it's certainly possible. |
Just wanted to quickly thank everyone for your advice and the dealership just called me and confirmed that he is personally driving to Fairhaven Dealer to pickup the compression tool. Will let you all know waht happens next.... (crossing my fingers)

Ah, it isn't at Fairhaven.
The more I re-read your description, the more I think it is your cat. Cat failure can progress very rapidly, where as compression doesn't unless you break a seal suddenly, and well, you would have given a different description there :) I went from a bit of power loss to massive power loss in a matter of a few days, and the last day went from alot of power loss to unable to maintain highway speed in about 30 miles. |

All of my car maintenance history that is... Where can i get the SSP 67 bulletin? You have a copy of it? |
SSP 67: http://forum.rx8nl.com/mwf/attach/97/6997/ad-18.pdf
Scroll down and you will see that the torque converter is covered by this warranty. There is no reason that they should not have replaced the torque converter or all necessary parts until it was fixed. |
UPDATE: Just got off the phone with the dealer..... looks like i need a new motor.... says its covered under warranty, i just need to give them my service records which i have at home and i am good to go hopefully :)

My car I believe is having that issue of the torque converter lock up. I brought it several times to the dealership and its still under warranty and there is nothing that they can do to fix it except putting in a TCM Logic wich helps reduce the problem by 50% and not 100%
What my deal was is that at low speeds, (I have an AT) it was bucking like getting stuck between 2 and 3rd gear. It couldnt make up its mind. So I just wanted to let everyone know that what everyone is saying about this issue is very much true and I will now drive it in manual mode more often and drive my car so it red lines at least once every other day Thanks for the advice all. |

Not driving my 8 now, i have a rental.... a Hyundai Sonata since Tuesday lol Thanks for the postive and kind words.... will keep you all posted. |
Glad you are getting a new engine Kim. Too bad it's taken this long before a dealer steps up, but hey, a free engine is never a bad thing :)
Actually, for 2004s and 2005s, getting a new engine INCREASES your car's value  Let me know if something comes up that you need help with :) |
Am I still coming over with the massage oils?
|
haha nice. Glad to see you are getting a new engine. Remember, once the engine is replaced, bring it for a test drive to see if you still have the same problem. If you do, make a tech go for a ride with you to verify the problem. As hard as it may be, don't bring it home if there is still the initial problem when they are done.

I think you missed the part where the current dealer is giving her a new engine under warranty and the issue is resolved :)

Issue isn't technically resolved yet. Her first problem that has been happening for a long time was blamed on the torque converter locking and causing her car to stall/jerk often if I remember right. The engine just so happens to be bad and need replacement. Hopefully all works out for the best and everything is fixed accordingly.

As someone who will probably be joining the new engine club soon (engine starts easily when cold and runs great; but acts like it's flooded when trying to restart when warm) I am curious how long is typical for a dealer to swap a defective engine.

Try revving your engine to 3k rpm for 5-10 seconds and then turn your car off while still at those rpms. Then see if it starts back up ok in a few minutes.
When I say warm, I mean the coolant temperature is at least 177F. At 200F, the problem is even worse. |
I usually only do it when it is really cold out. I never turn off the engine before it is fully warmed up and I never give my keys to someone else in fear that they will. Non rotary experienced people cause engine failures because "they know whats best"

It is probably too far out of your way, but if your desperate to find a good dealer and a good rotary mechanic to work with, get hooked up with Werner Mazda in Manchester, NH. Kelly is the service writer on the Mazda service desk and Mark is a grrrreat rotary mechanic. If you troll VOODOO8 on a search of this site you'll see I've posted up on a bunch of issues they have helped me with, there are a bunch of others I haven't bothered to post on. Bottom line - good people!

SSP 67 is the extended power train warranty which covers everything. SSP 67 = free work SSP 77 = low cost engine replacement. |
