Check enigne light - code PO301
So a couple days ago after filling up with gas i noticed a high pitched squeeling noise coming from the engine.
then about 20 seconds later it started running really rough. check engine light started blinking. and the car was rumbling lots.
It didnt seem to have much power at all. (just barely running)
I pulled the code PO301.
which is "cylinder 1 misfire"
I've searched and heard that it could be the typical plugs/coils/wires.
I have new sparkplugs that i could put in. but i dont want to foul them and lose $100
any ideas on whats wrong? or what i should do?

Power!!
Purchase new ignition coils and wires as well and install it all at the same time. Coils are a common problem and go ~40K miles. They're about $30 each from the dealer and you need 4. If you can replace your spark plugs you can replace your coils yourself.

Where do you guys suggest i buy the coils and wires?
I ordered my plugs from fluid motorsports. and the shipping and everything was great. but I'm wondering if theres a better wire set then the moroso one on fluid. or coils at a cheaper price somewhere?

I'm lost... I dont know what it could be.
I tried pulling codes but nothing showed up.

When you say the car isn't starting, does it attempt to?
If not, check your battery and connections.
If so, could be the starter or the engine is flooded.
I just read you 1st post and you mentioned a high-pitch noise.
Have you checked the belts for the proper tension?
If they comes loose, it'll make a high-pitch squeal.
Also, did you verify the coils are going to the correct plugs?

yeah I'm 99% sure everything was hooked up correctly.
I had another person helping me and i did it one by one. labeling everything.
I had the battery hooked up to a portable charger while trying to start it. even left it charging for quite a while and nothing. It turns over but doesnt seem to fire. everyonce and a while it seems like its about to start. but then back to the same dead sound.

Doesn't sound like it, but try the deflood procedure.. disconnect e-shaft sensor, remove spark plugs, crank the engine until fuel comes out or doesn't and then squirt a little bit of washer fluid in there. Reassemble and try to start it.
Oh, and double check all connections to the coils/wires/plugs. The ignition system definitely caused the problem but there may also be flooding..
You can also have someone push start the car. Pop the clutch at ~20mph.. that usually does the trick.

Yeah I'm gonna go over everything later today. make sure connections are tight and they're all leading to the right place.
I might try a push start too.

in case any of you were still wondering.
I got it all figured out today. got it towed to the mazda dealership.
they said one of the trailing and leading plugs were mixed up. I could've sworn i put them in right. anyways. they also said I need a new starter ($275)
and rotor 1 has no compression. luckily thats covered under warranty.

He said that rotor 1 had no compression, so that should mean a new engine is coming his way.
Any damage that could have been caused by mixing the plugs wouldn't matter.
I'm surprised the dealer isn't using the mixed plugs as an excuse as to why there wasn't compression on the rotor.
They usually try anything to not warranty the engine.

When i told him that the car never actually ran with the plugs installed then he was ok with that.
they mentioned an upgraded starter was highly recommended cause my old one was going. i thought that was covered under a recall?

I'm really not sure. It may have just been a TSB.
I think you said you were an 04............so hopefully someone will chime in on wether the ugraded started was a TSB or an actual recall.
