Today my check engine like came on in my 2004 RX8. I read the manual and checked the fuel cap and ofcourse they didn't put it on right. How long should it take for the check engine light to go off...if that was the problem?

 

Take it to Autozone and get the code pulled.

I went to my tire place to get an alignment and check an engine light and they wanted $108. I laughed in their faces and went to Autozone and got it for free in 10 seconds. They'll give you a vague description but then use google or our search to learn more.

you can try to reset the the car by disconnecting the battery for 10 mins or turn the car on (not the engine) and pump the brakes 20times as quick as you can turn off then run the engine

 

I also just had my check engine light come on as well. I was wondering if there's anything I can check myself before taking it into a dealership?
