Cel po442
My 05 MT popped a check engine light while it was warming up in the parking lot at work. PO 442 small emission control leak ( autozone code reader ). Power and proformance seem fine. I noticed a sucking grunt sound (sorry kinda hard to explain) when you stab the gas pedal the split second before the motor builds revs up. I've inspected all visible hoses and vaccum hoses, they look ok, have not been under car yet. All service up to date with current flash, and new plugs. I have an appt. at the dealer MAR 7 so if I can get it fixed myself it would be great.
Would this be covered under powertrain warranty? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, mulkio

Your gas cap isn't on tight enough.

I hope that is it. Would that explain the new noise I hear ? Thanks for the link stealthTL, that manual could come in handy.

how many "clicks" is your gas cap? the latest mazda gas cap is 24 clicks and has a new thread style (not really threads, but dunno what another name would be). the old style is 12-click and well i cant describe what the thread looks like. anywho the 12 clicks fail commonly.

Re-set the ecu.
Put your key in, hold the odo trip set in and do this, turn the key and pump the brake peddle as many times as you can till you see the oil gauge sweep up and down and test where your miles are.
Turn key off now turn key and pump the brake peddle as many times as you can till you see the oil gauge sweet up and down.
That should do it. Let us know!

I pulled negative terminal and BLAMMO no more CEL. I will take a drive today and see if it pops up again.
Thanks for all the help.
that method doesnt reset the ecu.
what he's thinking of is reseting the e-shaft position memory, which is key-on, pump brake pedal 20 times within 5 seconds. but that doesnt help a CEL.
when you removed the negative terminal you reset the memory so all drive cycles are erased/forgotten and all codes are erased as they wont go off until their proper drive cycles are completed.
So once you complete the necessary drive cycles (some monitors require weird conditions to be completed) for your code to reoccur it will flash on again unless the problem was fixed.
A gas cap code, p0455, is only set after a car is turned off. The evap pump will test the system after you drive and when you turn on the key the next time the light may come on. The evap test isnt ALWAYS conducted so it may take a few times to reappear. EVAP codes have a weird nature, so its less easy to predict.

Took car into mazda today. Pretty much dropped $150 to get it fixed.($109 diagnosis,$19 gas cap,$20 gas)
I should have ordered cap & done it myself.
Anyway thanks for the help & I hope this can help someone else.
