CEL and 40k miles

Members,

I thank you in advance for any input, and hope you are enjoying the holidays.

My RX-8 has been great, just recently I hit roughly 40,400 mile after a roundtrip of 850 miles. Well this morning I went to start my car, and the check engine light came on. Any ideas as to what might be the cause? Bad sensor somewhere, or maybe the cat going bad?

The engine sounds fine and the oil was changed roughly 1000 miles ago. Been driving in cold weather climate... between 20-40F. Spark plugs were also changed 1000 miles ago.

Guess I'll have to make the hike to the dealership... urgh.

Thanks much,

Steve

Does the gas cap really trigger a cel. If it does what failure code will a scan tool reveal?

Yep, first time I got the CEL for the gas, which was the day I bought the car. I went to service department cussing and yelling. Felt like an idiot once they told me what was the cause.

I just plugged into the ODBII port and pulled a P0004 code from the vehicle which is apparently and indicator of "Fuel Volume Control Circuit High." Any Ideas what that could be... ? Faulty sensor?

I went on a round trip of about 1000 miles and when I got home the next morning, the CEL came on. Cheap gas maybe? The car seems to be running fine.

According to the factory service manual there is no P0004 DTC. May be an erroneous reading by an incompatible scanner. What did you use to read the code? Is it CAN bus compatible?

I used Harrison's CanScan tool. Hmmm interesting. Maybe I'm not pulling the codes correctly from the ECU. I've been pulling them with the car on?

I cleared the code for now along with a P1000 which supposedly is an incomplete scan. After a few startups and shutoffs the CEL still hasn't come on... it is still giving me Incomplete tests for some of the systems, so I assume that it needs to go through a few more duty cycles.

Any thoughts on how I should be pulling the code and what might be wrong?

Steve

I'm not very familiar with scanners so your best to go by the Harrison and the factory service manual instructions. I would guess that you could take the readings with the engine running or not as long as the ignition is in the on position and the ECU energized. It's my understanding that the Harrison is a decent tool and should give you correct readings if done correctly.

Ahh pulled the codes again. Its a P0410. Well, a good reason to schedule a service and make the trek!

Thanks for the help!

Well. I took it to the dealership once... I couldn't leave it overnight so they were unable to diagnose the problem. Took it back again, CEL gone... said one of the fuses to the air pump had blown. I got in the car, drove it a mile or two, CEL came back on. Took it straight back to the dealer... they think there might be a short somewhere in the wiring harness even though the checked for continuity.

Any thoughts? The car was throwing a P0410.

Well they're now replacing the air pump, to see if that fixes the problem. We shall see.
