CD Player Trouble
Alright, so my CD player in my 04 8 just decided to stop working! I have no idea why as everything else in the stereo still works. It has been this way for a little bit and now I am finally getting around to figuring out what is wrong. Does anybody know what is wrong/how to fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated!

for future posts/thread put as much detail as you can for the car, this one for example. what kind of radio is in your car? single disk? 6? tapedeck? mini? satellite? aftermarket?
give us poop to work with and get poop back also give this thread a look over |

If anyone knows the answer, it would be of major help! Have tried all methods I could find on the forums, and still nothing. :(

try following the steps on post #4 in this thread!

People still use compact discs?
Anyway, since Google Drive is blocked at my office, can you describe the problem in any sort of detail? All I've got right now is "doesn't work" which is incredibly non-useful. Also, this would probably have been better posted in the Interior, Audio, and Electronics sub-forum... https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-int...lectronics-24/ |

Sounds like it may be a mechanical issue with the changer itself. Is the changer in the dash or the trunk?
If it were me, I'd take a small screwdriver and have a poke around inside. Can't really break it more than broken. |

It's not hard to remove the head unit. Just time consuming and a little uncomfortable getting to the hidden bolt.

I still have the stock head unit, so no USB for me. All the other sources don't sound as good and can experience interruptions. With all that said...

I love my CD player and can't imagine not having it. (In fact, was looking at the new '19 Miata, which no longer has one. Which means I will not be buying a '19 Miata. Kind of like recent VW GTIs: no 3-door? No deal!)
I have a good headset for music at home anyway. |

Uh, no… that's a common misconception around these parts, but it's simply not true. An unfact. CDs are great, and many people enjoy 'em, including CNET's resident audio expert, who can and does listen to any format he prefers:

I could use my phone and plug the AUX cable in, but every time I want to skip or repeat a track, I'd have to fumble with my phone and that's a big no-no, and my hands would be busy with the steering wheel and gear stick anyway. With the new Miata, though, I'd imagine the Android Auto/CarPlay has very well integrated controls for your phone, and I'd imagine there is also a USB port as well, so the loss of CD player isn't a big deal at all to me. |

A big reason I use the CD player in my 8 is that the controls are integrated into the steering wheel, so the distraction is very minimal. I just listen to whatever sounds best, whether the technology is old or new. And that means vinyl and CD (minus the early crappy ones). And I like having one medium for both home and car. Yeah, obviously quality vinyl playback is in-home only, but the same CD that I play at home on my Oppo UHD-205 Blu-ray Disc player pops into the CD player in my 8 and voila… there's great sounding music. All without me having to deal with playlists, directories, CarPlay, smartphones, streaming, folders, volumes or any other crap like that. |
Luddite much? :p:

some 8s had a factory tape deck in the head unit. it was in the place of the shiny black plate under the vol knob
I will have to see a non-nav RX-8 head unit for reference, though. Mine has the touchscreen nav and has a totally different layout.

But really though, you not wanting a 2019 Miata just because it doesn't have a CD player... Come on, man. A roadster will have a lot of noise naturally... So sound quality really goes out of the window at this point. |

I am little surprised you didn't say "now get off my lawn" at the end.
But really though, you not wanting a 2019 Miata just because it doesn't have a CD player... come on, man. “The CD was released in 1982, and for a while, you had to spend a small fortune on CD players in order to listen to this then-innovative digital sound format. Then, in the '90s and 2000s, CD players became friendly to the average person’s wallet. Now, with the rise of digital streaming and downloadable music, CD players have circled back a bit and now occupy a niche of high end, retro audiophile-friendly (read: expensive) sound systems. So, with the convenience of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, why would you get a CD player? Well, the answer is the DAC (digital audio converter). Most Bluetooth speakers sacrifice sound quality for simple functionality, which ends up being fine because you’re probably listening to MP3s anyway. But if you want to listen to beautiful, lossless, CD-quality sound, you’ll need a high-quality system. These CD players are all perfectly viable purchases in 2018, some more premium than others. So, whether you’re looking to spend almost a grand, or under $100, the CD player is still alive and well, at least for some music listeners.” |

you also have an S2 which is slightly different than an S1 The nav unit is supposedly very similar to the Mazda 5 nav unit, as they share the same nav user manual. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...4d4d4f845a.jpg The CD slot is hidden behind the screen. The screen is motorized and move out of the way as you choose to load/eject a CD.

Well, of course. But I get to use the same format at home (where 80% of my listening is done) and on the road. Plus, when I park a Miata on a scenic overlook high above the Hudson River, road noise is zero. ;) 1. Buy a portable CD player that plugs into the AUX/USB port, and get a couple of batteries(if it's battery powered) or a power bank(USB powered). It's more work, but if you care that much about audio quality, I don't think you will mind doing it. The whole setup shouldn't cost you over $100. 2. Replace the head unit altogether with an aftermarket one with a CD player. |

I understand but think of solutions for your dilemma. I can think of 2 off my head:
1. Buy a portable CD player that plugs into the AUX/USB port, and get a couple of batteries(if it's battery powered) or a power bank(USB powered). It's more work, but if you care that much about audio quality, I don't think you will mind doing it. The whole setup shouldn't cost you over $100. 2. Now that I think of it, you don't even need a power bank if the CD player is powered by a USB port. You can just use a 12V adapter for it and plug it into the car.
