Car Won't Start

I have a 2004 RX8 with about 80,000k on it. Prior to my deployment I replaced and changed nearly everything on my car with exception of the fuel pump/filter and starter. While I was deployed on of my friends took care of driving my car (extremely liberally) only for me to return to understand it no longer drives--or starts for that matter... perfect welcome home present. He claims it ran fine whilst he drove it, with no issues. So it mysteriously died while sitting in my garage...

I have ran diagnostics with the COBB AP, and I have tested the battery (fine), plug wires/plugs, and of course the BHR coils I have... all are in good shape. MAF was recently replaced as well as the intake filter... air flow is fine. So since the engine gets good spark, and it seems to get air?... haven't done a compression test nor do I really want to... would consensus be that its a fuel filter/pump problem?

Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks...

can you push start it?

are the plugs dirty or wet?

is the maf screwed in snug all the connections are in properly?

Eshaft sensor is ok and connected?

BHR coils are grounded properly?

what happens when you try to start it?

Battery terminals are on tight, try moving them around a little.

Start with that then report back.

How long was it sitting?

I have had a long hard start if I let my car sit too long as the fuel evporates.

Turn the key on let it sit until it stops the ding ding sing do that a few times and the fuel should reach the rotors.

B) Your friend blew the engine.

Ok so after scratching my head for a few I figured it out...

Checked the starter which sounded like it was turning over fine... shot, absolutely shot. I replaced it as the starter was close to the end of its life so after cranking multiple times on a flooded engine it gave up.

Battery was also dead from attempting to start a flooded car with no starter.

All in all, recharged battery, replaced plugs and starter and it works fine.

We can help but we need much better info.....

A- You put in a new starter then it won't start?

B- You moved it and flooded it?

C- "Is dead" - but you hear the starter gears cranking????

Pick one of the above and we'll go from there!

I am having a non start issue with my 2004 rx-8 also. Bought the car used in 8/12, after 4 days it wouldnt start. It has 60k miles. Carbon build up in port, the plugs were rusting out & the ignition coils burnt out. Carbon blasting was performed, plugs, ignition wires & coils all replaced. O & both engine mounts were worn, replaced those too. Now, not starting again, it's turning, but that's it. Removed & cleaned plugs, new battery, still nothing. Next step? Thanks for any help!

Easy things first: it could be flooded. Were the plugs covered in gas when you pulled them??

To deflood, either pullstart it or push the gas pedal all the way down and try to start it. Don't let go of the gas. Crank for 5-8 seconds 2 or 3 times. Then try to start it normally.

As Loki said, Try roll/push-starting it.

Dad
You probably need to recharge the battery at this point if you don't hear anything at all when you try to crank the engine, but nothing happens.

You do understand what a battery is, and how it needs to be full of electricity, right?

Jump start car using another car with a fully charged battery, or hook up a battery charger for several hours.

BC.

It doesn't matter if your battery is brand new, it will only take about five or six long cranks to drain that new battery. If you have an automatic, take it to the dealer; however, a manual can be pull/pushed start: place the gear in second, get the car moving, pop the clutch at 8 mph. And you haven't answered Loki's question.

Don't care.
Brand new batteries can be cranked until they are just as dead as the old battery.

Try this:

Recharge battery.
Remove spark plugs from engine.
Crank engine.

Does it actually spin now?
Did a whole bunch of fuel spray out from the spark plug holes?

Reinstall NEW spark plugs.

Turn ignition to ON position, but do not crank engine.
Step on and off brake pedal 20 times really quickly.
If you did it right, the oil pressure gauge will move back and forth.
Turn off ignition.

Now try to start engine, but with gas pedal pressed to floor for 6 seconds, and release it.

Did it start this time?

BC.

Car is No Crank at all, Zero nada!!!!! Replace all 4 spark plugs follow instructions from posted!! nothing Happen...Might be too much Carbon build-up in the intake or exhaust as some of them travel over the open port during the rotor rotation!!!! Apex seals might be damage so w/oil seals. Any Recommendation to Independent Roatary Engine Mechanic here @ Bay Area to save couple of bucks?????

thanx....

check fuses.... ignition key fuse will give you all lights off like your battery is dead as hell...

other than that if your battery is good, spark and fuel delivery is good, then you prob have a blown engine. but if your car is No Crank at all, Zero nada then you are experiencing electrical problems.

common sense tells us to work backwards from the problem..so if the starter isnt spinning, make sure the starter is getting power (using multimeter on starter) if it is, then your starter is bad. if it isnt, move on... then check wiring, fuses and battery. keep a multimeter on your battery. shouldnt drop below 12v.. 11 is low but can possibly start your car. if battery is good, then your fuses or wiring somewhere is shot
