Broken AC Temp Control ****

I just replaced the temp control **** on my wife's 2004 RX-8. Below are the pictures of the ****, the old/broken one is on the right. As you can see, the new **** design is much "beefier" than the old one. Got the new **** for $30.31 from a local dealer, after showing them Trussville's price.

I'm not sure if the dealer broke the **** during the latest recall (I didn't think about that until reading some of the other threads), but I feel like Mazda should cover this part even though the warranty coverage has expired.

I'll probably call the dealer and ask if it could have been broke during the recall work. Do you think I should also call Mazda North America about the fact that the old part was obviously a defective design?

I think there is a Service Bulletin on this issue.

Yep...TSB, warranty item.

It would have been nice if the parts guy had known and/or mentioned this before charging for one.

Warranty valid beyond 50k miles?

I got the notice for the extended warranty to 60,000 miles, but it doesn't cover interior. My wife's car has over 50,000 miles, i.e. its past the warranty period.

Will the dealer still replace as a warranty repair item?

Doubt it. Just be glad it is the **** and not the whole unit, I have had mine replaced twice. First time the defrost button cracked, the second time the temperature control stopped working all together.

You're out of luck then.
