Bringing the car in - very big power loss
Bringing the car in - very big power loss
This thursday i'm bringing the car in to the dealer. Frankly, the high-end power is GONE. When I go WOT about about 5K it feels like the car is yanking ALL the timing....and as if the c[b]a[b/b]r were pushing through hurricane-force winds. I suspecting it's either the cat, or coils. btw, economy has dropped from usual 17mpg, to about 12.
IF they tell me they're going to have to replace the engine, I'll absolutely look to trade the car in asap. There's no way I want an engine with miles which doesn't match the rest of the car.
Considering G35 or STI.

So, are you saying that you don't want the car after a new or rebuilt engine is installed? Not sure I follow that line of thinking. In any case, I suspect that you will take a sizable hit by getting rid of the RX-8 this soon. But hey, it's your money.

This sounds to me more like someone who's just looking for a reason to get rid of the car. Oh well, maybe a G35 or STI will serve you better. Good Luck.

Here's the line of thinking. When we sell a car, we've got to indicate if the miles match the engine. I don't want to have to check 'no'... I don't care about a sizeable hit - I care about having a FUN car that I trust to take the driving I do, without breaking. So far, the RX8 always has me worried.
Hopefully the problem is small, and luckily I've caught it soon enough for when/if it happens AGAIN 18K miles from now, I'll have some warranty left.

Actually, I'm trying to get the RX8 to give me a reason to KEEP it.

dont know yet. the first time is was suspect bad gas. but i know that was not it.... maybe carbon on the secondary intakes....
i had a long chat with the master tech about the issue and my luck is good. the guy from japan is still in town.... i know you will find it hard to believe.... but it is a big dealer...
i had my scanalizer hooked up while the whole thing happened.... was able to give them lots and lots of info...
your issue is likely a clogged cat......
mine is going to be a bit more complex than that..... but love the car. am not looking to get rid of it..

issues being reported, if you mean by "big dealer" that this is a recognized problem by Mazda??
this symptom has more than one solution.... it has been a problem, but i dont think i would call it big....
you might want to read around for a while..... if you are looking for the sky is falling, this is not it..

I know what you mean dmp. I experienced the same problems as you, only in addition five foot flames shot out my exhaust and melted my bumper. I thought it was a cat failure, but it turned out to be a bad coil. The coil was replaced and everythng seemed fine but I have had two more check engine lights come on since then. I now must take time off from work to bring my car to the dealership for the third time in a month! My car gets sick more than I do. As much as I love my 8, and would hate to part with it, I am also considering a g35 coupe in the meantime, at least until the new Supra or something else more reliable comes along. Looks being subjective, its faster, gets better gas mileage and a freind of mine with one has had zero problems. I would be very afraid to own this car without a warranty. I know love is supposedly blind, but the reasons for me wanting to get rid of the car are really starting to outweigh the reasons for me to keep it.

ya know.
five foot flames, melted bumper.... not very likely with bad coil..... you got a code for any of the cels you have had.... they would be on you repair order.....

No - love can't be blind for those of us without $30k in disposable income. I paid for a sports car, I've got something which doesn't quite seem to want to BE a sports car.
DMP, did you ever test your coils before (or get them REALL tested by the tech, with a multimeter???)
If you've been driving this long on damaged coils, they could have finally gone kaput.

Sounds exactly like what I felt when my cat went. Poor gas mileage and absolutely no power in the high RPMs.
Are you driving it? If so, has the power loss gotten progressively worse over several days? By the time I got to the dealer it was having trouble redlining in first gear at WOT.

I have no ability to test the coils. The car goes into the shop thursday. We'll see what they say AFTER I tell them to 'try harder' when they initially come back with "It's that aftermarket intake and exhaust!".

yeah - still driving it; no choice. And yes - since last weekend there's less and less power. Ever accidentaly rev the engine while cold? It's almost like that - the engine just doesn't want to rev. Right now, it struggles with getting to red line under load. At first it was mostly on the highway. Seems the lack of '*****' has progressed to the lower gears. I really hope and pray it's something simple - still, I have nothing to convince me even new coils won't go bad in another 18K miles.

Thanks for the 'constructive' replies y'all. The 'other' replies - you aren't impressing anyone.

since you asked, some day you'll come to realize how insigificant this is compared to a lot worse burdens in life to bear

That's what I thought. I was willing to bet my life that it was my cat that went out. If that were the case, combined with my Greddy exhaust, five foot flames are very likely. However, the tech said that it was a bad coil. They replaced it and it ran great, but it seems like its starting to screw up again. I believe it was the random misfire code, I'll check and see. I'm going to ask the dealer to take the cat off and inspect it before I belive that theres nothing wrong with it. What else would cause flames, AND sparks to shoot out my exhaust? I'm sure I scared the s**t out of some people on the interstate that day
