blinking engine light when underload

Hi guys
I recently started having blinking engine lights when I am accelerating and holding my RPM at around 6-7k.
Once it starts blinking, I would upgear the car and drop the RPM. The engine light would blink for about another 10 seconds and then disappear. This has happened twice now, but the car drives fine and it can pull to 9k without the engine light blinking. I am kind of confused for what it is doing? (O2 sensor??)
I have Agency power pulley, Black Halo Racing flywheel, and a new clutch.
it's an 04 model made in the August of 03. 6speed manual.
Any idea would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if a blinky engine light stores a cel code ...
But anywho you need to read the code if any before you even start to diagnose the problem.

Things to speculate about
- Misfire
- Eccentric Shaft Sensor (dirty)
- Rear O2 sensor
- Clean the MAF
- Vacuum leak, SSV or VDI
- Gas cap

The list goes on and on

100% guarantee that it is ignition-related.

you could be right, since i haven't changed the plugs or the coils or the wires since day 1, because they are working fine.

either way, i should still go read a code right?

Always, when you have a CEL of any kind. It is likely to be a 300/301/302 code.

I have a 2004 6 speed RX-8 I just bought. I am getting a 301 misfire code. The car runs great but it wont pass emissions with check engine light on. I have changed the plugs, wires and coils. No change. I changed the 02 sensors still 301 misfire code. It has a after market exhaust system without a catalytic converter. It also has a after market intake. The car runs great no problems but the check engine light with the 301 misfire code. Can no cat cause a misfire code?

You need to have a compression test performed if you're sure the coils wires and plugs are all new, and perfectly installed. Might want to double check the wires to make sure they weren't routed to the wrong spark plug, if you paid someone else to do the work for you.

Once you rule out the ignition system, compression test is your next step.

BC.

I just had this same problem just start last nite. Engine replaced 3000 miles ago new coils new plugs.and new catalytic converter all replaced under warranty from Mazda. Added K&N intake and Turbo XS exhaust. Havent seen the light come on until last nite. Car drives fine just when it gets to redline it flashes and then goes away when I drive like a civil person. Only thing I can think of is fuel pump or O2 sensor but any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

I know I have a CEL on for a couple of reasons working on fixing them myself. Well when I'm hotroddin my car and stay redlined for just a few seconds my light starts blinking as well. My plugs and wires aren't that old and coils are still young. I had to replace my rear o2 sensor about 2+ years ago. So I was assuming it was probably my front o2 sensor that needs replacing now, but hard to cough up $340 for one which I think is rediculous.

Just a quick thought, check your oil level. My light came on in the same manner and it turns out I was just a bit low on oil. The pressure dropped and the light came on. Just my $.02.

i had this problem too and right away i knew it was a misfire problem.
got home and started checking all my ignition related parts and found it was one of my coils that was failing. replaced the 1 coil and all the plugs and wires as well but kept stock coils for now until i get my BHR ignition coils.
